Go to fullsize imageBLESSED MERDEKA 2007!

A malaysian Indian aged 100 and another young lad in Australia had this to say and I believe it summarizes what we all feel this MERDEKA DAY as we turn 50!

“Back in those days, we all worked as one race, one nation without any differentiation of caste or religion,” he said.   “The Malays, Chinese and Indians all were very cordial and never looked at each other as being different.  “Some of us stayed freely in our Malay and Chinese friends’ houses without any hesitation.’

Thuryrajah Sinnaypoo 100 YEARS OLD!

Will those days ever return? JG

Another interesting prayer was from Steve Oh in Australia who had this to say:

A prayer for the nation:

PARDON me if I don’t fly the Jalur Gemilang but I will certainly be raising my heart to God for you. In moments of quiet contemplation:

I WILL pray for the King, the Government, the opposition, the NGOs and patriotic individuals, and all the governing authorities who collectively make your democracy work under the ambit of the Constitution.

I WILL remember the many foreign workers in the country who build the physical infrastructures for you that you might be a towering nation recognised by the world not for the wrong reasons but the right ones.

I WILL spare a thought for the foreign maids who help build the homes of your children and nurture the lives of your next generation.

I WILL remember that the road to nationhood was a hard fought one albeit without bloodshed but not without the sweat and tears of a generation that gave us the wisdom of the country’s motto that “unity is strength” and that it is something not to be taken for granted and should not be tampered with by those who are myopic in their self-interests and foolishly undermine national harmony.

I WILL pray for the judges, the police, the teachers, the bureaucrats and all those in positions of trust and responsibility that they may remember that the destiny of their nation rests in how they perform their duties honestly and justly without fear or favour and serve the people with a clear conscience before the Almighty.

I WILL pray that the demon of corruption that exists within you will be exorcised for its pervasive and pernicious influence undermines your very existence and threatens to destroy all the good that you have gained until now.

I WILL pray that those who have faith will learn to use faith to engage in acts of good works for bigotry was the sin of the devil. Righteousness exalts a nation.

May your children grow in love for one another and realise that life is but a blink of the eye in the realm of eternity and that we are all sojourners on this planet.

More is gained by our reaching out to one another with a helpful hand for indeed this is the spirit of Merdeka – the spirit of loving your neighbour as yourself, the spirit of positive construction.

God bless the King and rulers, government, and peoples of Malaysia.

STEVE OH,Winthrop, Australia.

LOOK OUT FOR YOUNG NURIN JG URGES!

Eight-year-old Nurin Jazlin Jazimin, is missing since Aug 22, was seen being pulled into a van near a pasar malam in Wangsa Maju where she had gone.

It is reported that a neighbour’s daughter had seen a man, believed to be in his early 20s, standing outside a van and later pulling Nurin into the vehicle.

Nurin is said to have resisted.

We urge all of you to keep a lookout for this young child – please make this your MERDEKA MISSION!

And other parents please beware we have warned you before about watching over your children – but many fail repeatedly.

AG’S NO FAULT LIABILITY SCHEME (NFLS) WELCOMED BY CONSUMERS!

August 30, 2007 on 12:10 am | In General | Comments Off

AG’S NO FAULT LIABILITY SCHEME (NFLS) WELCOMED BY CONSUMERS!

The Consumers Association of Subang and Shah Alam, Selangor (CASSA) is delighted at the attorney-general’s proposal for a no-fault liability scheme (NFLS) for motor vehicle accidents.

The proposal has been on the discussion scheme for more than two decades and despite strong support in the ranks of consumerists, consumers, members of the civil society and victims it was ‘never allowed’ to make its entry due to strong lobby from groups with vested interests.

As such, we are delighted that our Attorney General Abdul Gani Patail has had the courage and conviction to resurrect the scheme and we duly appeal that it be fast tracked in its implementation.

It is public knowledge and a curse that the current system takes far too long for motor vehicles accidents victims (MVAV) to be compensated and when they finally are – “heavy contingency and other deductions and fees” charged by lawyers make the compensation a joke!

The proposed scheme in CASSA’s knowledge will certainly address this blatant shortchanging and injustice to affected consumers!

To make the scheme workable and fast paced the present Subordinate Court Rules Act 1955, rules of evidence and procedures available should be also modified.

Lobbyists from the insurance fraternity need not be too concerned at loss of business as the composition of the said scheme would save millions paid out in legal representation.

However, as a consumer advocate of three decades I must appeal to the AG’s office that a select committee be appointed to oversee that the scheme will not be manipulated or shortchanged by any quarter!

In this aspect, the same select committee should have the powers enshrined to address fraudulent claims and on the composition of a fair and reasonable award taking the need to balance public interest and national policy!

‘Pak Lah’s statement hurt many. Dissent and constructive criticism is not a crime’ - Dr Jacob George

A leading mainstream newspaper well-known for its ‘apple polishing’ stories and political public relations pieces on Sundays carries the following heading ‘Quality and excellence need to be the guiding principle’ in one of its reports.

This in reference, perhaps, to the hopeful desire that our institutions of higher education should have these hallmarks in order to be effective in a changing and challenging world environment. Whether this is yet another dose of rhetoric given to hype-up our feelings as the country prepares for another election is anyone’s guess.

But the reality is quality and excellence cannot be sidelined for political expediency as it breeds contempt and virtually displaces the country’s professionalism and competency.

Several pages away in the same newspaper - no less startling - is another report where accusations are made against all those who claim that Malaysia is inefficient and lacking in integrity.

One is also accused of wrong when one addresses the increasing disunity, polarization and economic decline. The truth is politicians frequently preach about national unity and freedom for all religions but the truth remains that both have taken for the worse over last five years.

It would be a notorious joke if we deny that there is not a day in a Malaysian’s life where he or she confronts issues of race and religion or staring at the face of racism in its many forms and modes as one attempts to strive for a better quality of life.

It is rather sad that today those who hold these views and without a political agenda are all called ‘naysayer and detractors.’

The pertinent question remains - Do the politicians that lead us today still have the audacity to claim that they are decent, full of compassion, tolerant, honest and dedicated to the nation?

These virtues were that of our founding fathers as they toiled together as one community to lay the foundations to this nation that will celebrate its 50th year independence shortly.

But today, the nation’s crime index is high, organized crime a reality, corruption openly practiced with a lack of integrity and transparency, an unhealthy blame game going on between politicians, civil servants and officials with abuse of power and corruption rampaging unhindered by elected representatives and ‘political warlords’.

And if today’s leadership are following the footsteps of our founding fathers why the fear and paranoia to debate pertinent issues confronting the nation as in the PKFZ debacle?

If indeed we are people of integrity as we repeatedly claim in local and foreign fora, why are we rushing through the Industrial Relations (Amendment) Bill despite knowledge that it will erode what little protection is left for the Malaysian workers?

In the same context, why are we preventing the handling over of a memorandum from trade union representatives to their elected representatives in Parliament?

I am certain that I am not the only Malaysian who has been so ‘embarrassed and disappointed’ at the way the country has been ‘managed’ for the last five years in terms of accountability, transparency, good governance, integrity and common decency.

The sad thing is I may now be called a ‘naysayer and detractor’ because for this 50th anniversary of our independence, all I am asking for is that the country be managed with competence, honesty and integrity.

Those who know they cannot lead without showing religious maturity, commitment, courage and decency should step aside in the nation’s interests.

And I say this because I love my country - MALAYSIA!

JG SAYS:

Friends in Japan just e-mailed me saying that they have been the target of a great number of e-mail scams of late!

Yes we dealt with this many times over but these scammers are today well organized in several countries and operating with an educated lot!

I suspect they are using students as their lead writers.

Students from African countries especially Nigeria, Tanzania, Kenya and South Africa who are in many countries studying on student visas!

So far they (the scams) have come from the US, Britain, Netherlands, France, Italy, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, Australia and Korea.

But the fact remains - it is a scam!

So as consumers our advice to you stay away from them!

Period!

US AG - ANOTHER BUSH LOYALIST HITS THE DUST!

Yes - embattled U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has resigned!

Reports indicate that President Bush is expected to make a statement about Gonzales at 11:50 a.m. from his ranch in Crawford, Texas, where he has been vacationing.

Rumors are plenty that apart from Gonzales no one knew anything about the resignation.

As far as I am concerned - Alberto Gonzalez was not so much the Attorney General as he was the president’s attorney.

There are far too many allegations that he ignored his duties as Attorney General.

The strongest argument that could be made in his favor is that he was only incompetent, instead of intentionally ignoring the constitution that he swore to uphold.

For example when the Attorney General states that the right to Habeas Corpus is not in the Constitution it sends all kinds of negative signals!

At least in the USA – you can get rid of incompetent people, but there are countries in the world, one cannot even when they are stupid, incompetent, complete fools, corrupt and abuse their powers to rob the nation of its silver and the controlled media makes them look like national heroes deserving the equal of a ‘purple heart!’

Its business as usual!

WILL A RESHUFFLE SAVE JAPAN’S ABE – NAY SAYS JG!

It was the topic of discussions among several of us past and present diplomats, academic and political/consumer intelligentsia!

That Japan’s prime minister Shinzo Abe is expected to name new leadership of the ruling party and reshuffle his Cabinet on today the 27 0f August after a grave defeat of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party in the upper house election in July.

Interestingly, Kyodo News also stated that the new party leadership will probably be announced on Monday morning at a party General Council meeting.

According to political pundits and analysts - Foreign Minister Taro Aso is likely to be secretary general of the LDP, the party’s No. 2 after LDP president Abe himself.

Taro reportedly accepted the offer on telephone on Sunday.

The revamping of Cabinet is expected to begin in the afternoon and be officially announced in the evening, according to media reports.

Interestingly of note is that in the new Cabinet lineup, Tetsuzo Fuyushiba, the only member from the ruling coalition New Komeito Party, is likely to remain as land, infrastructure and transport minister.

According to some senior lawmakers from the ruling party candidates like former foreign ministers Nobutaka Machimura and Masahiko Komura and LDP policy Chief Shoichi Nakagawa may enter the new Cabinet too!

These political moves come following the LDP’s failure to retain majority in the House of Councilors after the election last month where PM Abe stated that he would reshuffle the Cabinet and the ruling party leadership in August this year.

But will it save Abe?

From the ‘body language’ expressed his days as PM are numbered!

It has to be expected more when you are found incompetent at all corners!

Generally by ‘convention and dignity of the office’ politicians and national leaders cannot afford to ’sleep on their job!’

But, in some countries you can!

Now what is Onam?

Onam as a very important festival. This festival often falls around the month of September.

If you ever visit Kerala in India around this festive period you can expect to be absorbed by the joyful festive mood which would go on for about ten days as the Onam festival’s celebrations last for a period of ten days.

Legend -Legend has that Onam is celebrated after the memory of King Mahabali. It was said that the King ruled Kerala long time ago and that he was a good King who looked after his people well.

Thus Onam symbolizes the joyful rule of the King and the happiness that the people had under his rule. The people also have the belief that during Onam, the King returns to Kerala to visit his people.

Celebrations

The people in Kerala who celebrate Onam prepare for the festival by cleaning their houses and decorating them. On Onam, everybody in the family would be wearing new clothes. Delicious sweetmeats and favorite vegetarian dishes would be cooked and served on banana leaves.

One important item that would be visible outside each house is the ‘pookalam’ a flower mat. This flower mat is like a symbol of welcoming the King Mahabali.

During Onam, traditional rituals are performed and the people celebrate the occasion with a grand feast. One favorite dessert that would be served on the day is ‘payasam’ a sweet & tempting porridge.

During the celebrations of Onam, if you’re a tourist in Kerala, you can never miss the colorful parade of elephants & fireworks.

For entertainment, the popular Indian dance, ‘Kathakali’ dance would be performed and other spectacular events like carnivals and sports events would be some of the highlights for the festival as well.

At night there would also be songs and dances to delight all.

In fact, it has been noted that a high number of tourists would always visit kerala around this period just to catch all the action and joyous celebrations of Onam.

Another attractive feature to watch out for during the festival Onam is the famous ‘Vallamkali’ or otherwise known as the great boat race. For this boat race hundreds of men row the boats to the beat of drums and cymbals.

An interesting thing to note is that above each boat there is a scarlet silk umbrella and gold coins are hung from the umbrellas. There are various boats, which also include the ‘Chundans’: the snake-like long boats that are shaped like snakes.

This event is a very popular with many as various types of boats compete with each other to win the race. Many usually crowd around to catch the boat race and some cheer for their favorites to win.

One remarkable thing about Onam is that it is celebrated by all, not only Hindus but also by Christians and Muslims who are living in Kerala.

It is one festival that unites all people regardless of race and religion!

Are we missing something here in this land where we ‘preach great sermons and beattitudes’ - top down - but don’t practice?

Oh never mind – I wish all MALAYSIANS - A HAPPY & BLESSED ONAM 2007!

INTERNAL SECURITY MINISTRY’S ACTION ON MAKKAL OSAI - APT SAYS JG!

August 26, 2007 on 5:57 pm | In General | Comments Off

Go to fullsize image ’Christians expect others to be sensitive to their sacred religious belief!”

I laud the action by the Internal Security Ministry in  suspending Tamil newspaper, Makkal Osai, for publishing an offensive picture of my LORD JESUS CHRIST!

I am glad that my dear friend - Information Minister, Zainuddin Maidin also fully agrees in the action, in view of national security!

He said the action should be a reminder to all publications not to publish materials which offended the sensitivities of any race or religion.

A far as I am concerned, this action sends a message that the  government does not only act against those who publish articles or pictures that offend the sensitivities of the Malays and Muslims but all races and religions!

What Makkal Osai did was insulting and they need to be penalized!

I feel really insulted as a Christian when a news daily published its Tuesday’s edition, a caricature of Christ holding a cigarette in one hand and what appeared to be a can of beer in the other.

That was an unbecoming behavior and action!

As far as the Internal Security Ministry goes, I am ware that the said ministry’s action was in line with provisions in the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984 which has provisions to prevent the publication of materials that threaten public security, peace and morality, contravene the law, or threaten public or national interest.

For the record - Makkal Osai had published the offensive picture in its “Quote of the Day” column.

After being lambasted for this by various quarters, the newspaper openly apologised for ‘its oversight’ but a number of organisations went on to press for stern action by the government against the newspaper and the government acted in the public interest!

Apology is one thing but the law must also be allowed to take its course!

Well done Internal Security Ministry!

UTAH MINE COLLAPSE – OUR PRAYERS CONTINUE FOR A MIRACLE!

UTAH MINE COLLAPSE – OUR PRAYERS CONTINUE FOR A MIRACLE!

We are rather sad to hear that the Utah coal mine where six miners have been trapped for more than two weeks will be closed if one last rescue attempt fails to find signs they are alive.

This was stated by the site’s co-owner.

We understand that yesterday rescuers finished boring a fifth hole into the underground space where the men were last believed to have been located, and told that a sixth hole will be started soon.

But sadly, despite all efforts - no signs of life are evident.

The new is if this continues the mine will be shut down and turned into a tomb for the missing workers the co-owners say!

But till then they state they going to keep going until they run out of options but the reality is the situation looks dim!

For the record, rescuers have had no contact with the missing men since the mine collapsed August 6. Three rescuers were killed and six were injured in another collapse last Thursday, and officials said this week that the mine is too unstable to resume tunneling.

Officials have not yet announced what probes sent down the fifth hole have found.

Friends and family have identified the six missing miners as Luis Hernandez, Manuel Sanchez, Kerry Allred, Carlos Payan, Brandon Phillips and Don Erickson.

And this morning, we pay for them again and more so, for their families and loved ones!

We pray indeed for a miracle! And ……..why not?

CHINA’S PROTEST - ‘TIT FOR TAT?’

August 23, 2007 on 4:38 am | In General | Comments Off

Soya beans

The US is one of the leading exporters of soya beans to China

No - certainly - Its not funny China has accused some United States exporters of supplying ‘tainted soya bean crops.’We are advised that Chinese officials have stated that  potentially harmful “weeds and contaminated dirt” had been found in the beans, but made no mention of any import restrictions.

Why China decided to protest against this shipment no one can say, except that it does need a ‘rocket scientist’ to state that perhaps, just perhaps, China was trying to get her ‘own back’ on the US after the recent bans on China imports!

You will remember that China has recently been at the ‘centre of international concerns’ about the safety of some of its own exports, including toothpaste, pet food and, in the latest case, toys.

As far as this matter goes, we are told that US soya bean exporters feel China is just trying to get her own back against the US!

A game of ‘tit for tat!’

TOLL PROTEST JUSTIFIED!

Go to fullsize image ’tolls should be fair and reasonable not a money generating monster for the politically connected in the land’ - Dr Jacob George.

It is rather sad to hear that Syarikat Lebuhraya Lingkaran Luar Butterworth (LLB) Sdn Bhd is sticking to its decision to collect toll along the Sungai Nyior highway here from next month, despite public protest.

I can understand the feelings of the residents as a local boy!

The move after the toll collection was postponed for almost seven months!

Now we are told that effective 12.01am on Sept 1 toll would be collected!

Interestingly, the toll rate for class 1 vehicles was 50 sen.

I am told that the company will proceed with the collections despite the growing complaints from consumers!

For the record, several residents associations planned to boycott the highway on the first day and had collected some 8,000 signatures to be submitted to Prime Minister, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and I pray that the ‘toll collection instituition’ which is entrenched in the country will be relooked in a fair and transparent way!

Another area where there is growing contention is in Selangor where there is a new highway cutting across Shah Alam to Rawang through the Guthrie corridor!

Can you imagine several toll collectors in just a short stretch - whose monkeying around with this system?

FLYING THE FLAG - NOT THE ONLY TEST OF ONE’S LOVE FOR COUNTRY!

Go to fullsize image

The truth is there is a lot of people upset at the way things have been in the country of late!

And it could be one of the many reasons that there has been a ‘lukewarm response’ nationally to the flying of the flag in view of the national day!

True the private and commercial vehicle owners were urged to help ‘liven up the country’s 50th Merdeka celebration ‘by flying the national flag on their vehicles.

And the man to make the call, dear friend, Deputy Information Minister, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who stated that the response from the public to fly the “Jalur Gemilang” on their vehicles, homes as well as at government buildings and schools had been lukewarm so far.

He stated that this is Malaysia’s 50th Merdeka celebration where the people should show their love for the country by flying the flag!

I must remind my dear friend that flying the flag  is not just the only way to show one’s love for the coiuntry.

What is the use of saying we love the country but we allow the country to be mismanagement by corrupt officials, where accountability, good governance and transparency are just ‘buzz words’!

Whats the use of talking about loving the country when you stay silent at the many injustices taking place around us!

The truth is people are hurt and upset the way this country is being managed and the sooner this is acknowledged the better.

I am certain even our founding fathers if alive today - would be shocked at the level of crime, corruption, polarization, fanaticism, racism, apathy, incompetence and mismanagement that has become a hallmark in Malaysia today!

The earlier Zahid realises this the better!

HEALTH CHECKS IN SHOPPING CENTERS & HOTELS - WELL DONE HEALTH MINISTER!

Go to fullsize image‘Malaysia’s proactive health minister!’

Certainly I am supportive of the Health ministry’s ruling that health checks conducted at shopping centres and hotels should not be recognized by the Health Ministry.

I am also glad at that warning that action could be taken against those responsible!

The warning from Health Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek was right on cue and I agree that health checks could only be done at hospitals approved by the ministry.

It is certainly true that ‘organising health checks’ at shopping centres is unethical because they’re not the place for it.

And I am certain that the health ministry has never given permission to anybody to do that!

The minister reacted after newspaper reports of health checks at shopping centres and hotels conducted by individuals at special counters, and in some cases, with the collaboration of private hospitals.

We are advised that there, members of the public are usually given free health checks before being offered comprehensive and costly medical check-ups.

It is also of concern that the ministry has received two complaints on the matter and I agree fully with the minister that they should be forwarded to the Malaysian Medical Council for further action!

But dear minister, an humble appeal from a consumer advocate - please revamp the MMC!

NOW A FIVE MONTH PREGNANT GERMAN SOCIAL WORKER KIDNAPPED BY A GROUP OF SICKOS IN KABUL!

August 20, 2007 on 1:54 am | In General | Comments Off
Afghan police search a section of Kabul after a German woman was kidnapped from a restaurant on August 18, 2007 in Kabul, Afghanistan. ‘a show of force after the kidnapping - sheer stupidity!’ - Dr Jacob George

Whose interest fed when one kidnaps individuals who have lived a life for volunteerism to go to a strange land putting one’s life a risk to assist the down trodden and poor!

Only those really sick or mentally deprived of any rational can and will do this!

So it is hurting to see a kidnapped German lass who was reported to be 5 months pregnant in Afghan video.

The woman, who looked pale and whose head was covered with a white scarf, identified herself as Christina Meier.

Speaking in the local language Dari, she said: “I am OK”.

A turbaned man in dark glasses then appeared, and said Mrs Meier would not be harmed, before calling for the release of “innocent prisoners”.

What has Mrs Meier got to do with prisoners? Why bring her a social worker into the world of one hate and war?

This is simply pathetic and they have the audacity to say they are not bad people!

This aid worker who is in her 30s, works for a Christian organization called Ora International.

For the record if you remember the last time a foreigner was abducted in the city was in 2005.

That time it was an Italian woman who was released after a few weeks by the kidnappers whom all believe were a criminal gang.

It is really sad that this incident comes amid efforts to free 19 South Korean aid workers kidnapped by the Taleban in central Afghanistan.

In addition to the South Korean aid workers, Afghan officials are also trying to secure the release of a German man kidnapped from Wardak province in June.

I wonder why some ‘puritans of the world’ have remained silent at this brutal treatment to a group of the innocent human beings?

I wonder - really wonder!

WE PRAY FOR THE TRAPPED US MINERS AND THEIR FAMILIES!

WE PRAY FOR THE TRAPPED US MINERS AND THEIR FAMILIES!

As prayers went on at various parts of the civilized world for those trapped to be found and brought to safety we are advised that a fourth hole was drilled into part of a Utah mine, where six miners have been trapped underground for 12 days, which at this time of writing still yielded no signs of life, but according to those on the ground - they refuse to give up.

There are now plans to drill a fifth hole, we are advised!

Meanwhile, a team of experts was being assembled to determine whether tunneling efforts can continue in the mine after a seismic “mountain bump” Thursday resulted in the deaths of three rescue workers.

The bore hole pierced the mine, at a depth of about 1,400 feet, at about 9:15 a.m. Saturday, said one Richard Stickler, director of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration.

Crews attempted to signal to the miners by making noise with the drill and by setting off three rounds of explosive charges, and then maintained a “quiet period” in order to listen, he said.

But sadly we are told that they have yet to detect any signals from the miners underground but will continue they say which is important to all those who have a member of their family, friend in the trapped situation!

We continue to uphold these men and their families in prayer and for the LORD to intervene speedily!

Into THY HANDS OH LORD WE COMMIT THESE MEN!

Perak Sultan - Nation Can Lose Independence If Spirit To Serve Fades Away!

August 19, 2007 on 1:28 am | In General | Comments Off

Go to fullsize image‘precious advice given by HRH the Sultan of Perak but are the people for whom it is meant listening? I pray they do! - Dr Jacob George

There is a lot of truth when Sultan Azlan Shah of Perak says the nation can lose its independence if the people’s spirit to serve the country fades away.

HRH the Sultan of Perak was also right on course when he stated that that without noble leadership principles, the spirit to serve the nation will become thin and when it happens, the country’s independence will crumble.

I fully agree with HRH that history clearly denotes that the collapse of big empires was due to their leaderships losing their genuine spirit to serve the nation!

The Sultan therefore urged for attention be given to the students’ personality development besides academic achievement to produce quality human capital.

He stated that producing high academic achievers gives no meaning for the country and nation if they are untrustworthy, irresponsible, dishonest and unfair.

A situation like this will lead to tyranny and injustice out of greed, he added.

At the function where the Sultan stated the above the following were also present namely the Raja Permaisuri of Perak Tuanku Bainun, Perak Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Tajol Rosli Ghazali and Education Ministry Secretary-General Tan Sri Dr Zulkurnain Awang.

The words spoken are precious and need to be attended to but are the listerners willing to change their ways and act accordingly - your guess is as good as mine!
