JUST MATTER OF TIME BEFORE PERAK RETURNS TO BARISAN NASIONAL?

buntong sivasubramaniam dap perak 310308‘a shameful act indeed and a blow to democracy!’

It is indeed a major blow for the DAP when newly-elected Buntong state assemblyperson, A Sivasubramaniam quit the party claiming his actions was because Indians were given only one executive councilor’s post and not two as promised!

What ever else he states after I will take with a huge spoon of salt – because he should know better and that his actions will hurt his voters – the thousands who gave him their votes and trust!

If this is not a betrayal of trust I wonder what is!

For the record - Buntong is a state seat where nearly 50 percent of voters are from the Indian community and Sivasubramaniam won with 10,311 votes - double that of his opponent Lee Tung Lai of MCA!

So with Sivasubramaniam’s departure from the party, the DAP-PKR-PAS coalition state government is now hanging by a thread with only 30 seats in the 59-seat state assembly.

And I predict that within the next 72 hours another 3 will stand down resulting in Perak being the first state to return to the Barisan Nasional fold not by the will of the people but by sheer political manipulation and money politics!

Perhaps, this is what happens when as an Indian proverb goes ‘when you give flowers to a monkey!’

And according to the allegations from my grassroots, the going price is just RM5 million with a shelf life of six months!

We are living in interesting times as there is a high powered meeting also in Putrajaya tomorrow!

Whether this is all connected - or not - we will all know soon - rather soon!

But the proper way is for elected representatives to vacate their seat and recontest - that - is the ethical and honest way not like this, as it makes democracy a scam!

If this continues - GOD SAVE MALAYSIA!

Latest:

So he has done ‘a about turn’ so what? In my mind he is a real disgrace, more so to use Malaysian Indians and ‘MAKKAL SAKTHI’ to justify what he did!

Like I said - from what I gather the plot only thickens not the other way around!

Parties should have really checked the back ground of their candidates before fielding them - now it is going to come back to haunt them, believe me!

And the new politics is - whether you are a BN, PKR, DAP, PAS MP/ADUN you are for all races - a representative to look into the ‘rights and interests’ of ALL not under the ‘old, outdated and racist principle’ which is race orientated!

Those who are elected if they cannot understand this - they should immediately resign before these idiots cause more havoc in the new Malaysian political scene!

INVITATIONS TO MPS/ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES - EDUCATION MINISTRY TOLD TO GROW UP/EVOLVE WITH THE TIMES AND ASPIRATIONS OF THE VOTERS!

INVITATIONS TO MPS/ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES - EDUCATION MINISTRY TOLD TO GROW UP/EVOLVE WITH THE TIMES AND ASPIRATIONS OF THE VOTERS!

It is a classic case of double standards that we have lived with for over 50 years!

And those who have been practicing it have developed a unique political style but the only problem is Malaysians of all races are today rejecting such irresponsible behavior!

For the record, during the last elections we should ask why the Selangor State Education department allowed several politicians to gatecrash several education ministry seminars/conferences in the state.

An act that received a severe backlash from the participants themselves!

I challenge the state authorities to public deny these allegations before I give proof of these claims!

It seems like the case of sore losers and clearly indicates how today the Malaysian civil service structure have been politicized to an extent that civil servants seem beholden to political parties than as is required to the government of the day!

So if common sense prevails it should dawn on all to come to their senses and political realities and allow both Members of Parliament (MPs) and assemblymen from non-Barisan Nasional (BN) parties to attend and officiate at school and other public functions!

What is required is those invited should not politicize the event!

The justification is clear – it would be rather stupid to disallow elected representatives of the
people from events involving the people – the crux of what democracy is all about even if in Malaysia we have had a different dictatorial version for far too long!

The kind of where one does all to destroy freedom and institutions of state upholding check and balances and the independence of each tier in a working and serving democracy!

Then when out of political power to sing a totally different outdated tune when political landscape and aspirations have really shifted with today’s younger voters who have no political baggage like the former!

As far as school invitations are concerned – it must be always remembered institutions of education are all neutral zones and all parties must keep the situation and effect as such for the betterment of all.

So it is rather foolish for the Penang Education Director Ibrahim Mohamad to indicate any rejection of democratically elected individuals to school functions just because they come from political parties who have emerged victorious in 5 states after defeating the incumbents.

The directive from the Education Ministry must be immediately withdrawn!

This will be so if the Ministry of Education in Malaysia is filled and administrated by individuals who are academically and professionally trained and equipped as not to be like ‘political conduits’ who serve the short term obsessions of politicians and their hangers on rather than the long term interests of the nation and its voters!

HEALTH MINISTRY SHOULD OVERSEE SCHOOL CANTEEN STANDARDS AND OPERATORS SAYS JG!

Having monitored countless food poisoning cases and food handlers and canteens (see above pix) in Malaysia over 37 years I cannot but be glad that there will be a joint effort by both the Health Ministry and the Ministry of Education to hold jointly a course on food preparation for school canteen operators in a bid to ensure food quality meets prescribed standards.

Newly minted Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai has made the right start and in an area that public interest is paramount!

Children, food and food handlers!

I know – here we go again – as I have stated to earlier Health Ministers, dear friends, Chua Jui Meng and the best Health Minister we have had to date – the proactive and no nonsense, Dr Chua Soi Lek unless we really look into the issue of food handlers, the places food is prepared, the manner it is displayed and sold and the strict enforcement to result in food is neither recycled nor prepared in conditions that serve only a profit motive – we are moving away from the mark!

It is all about strict enforcement and fast tracked punitive sanctions when our Food Act is violated!

I agree with the Minister that we all hope having this program, food operators will be more responsible and adhere to high health standards so that food served to students and in a border sense, members of the public was clean, good and nutritional!

As I indicate always – you cannot leave these operators without surveillance and please amend the legislation to result in jail terms and huge fines - send irresponsible, profiteering and misbehaving food operators to jail – and the industry will behave!

I expect to discuss more with Minister Liow Tiong Lai when I see him this week for a quickie chat!

E-KESIHATAN REVIEW MUST BE DONE BY STAKEHOLDERS NOT RENT SEEKERS SAYS JG!

Go to fullsize image‘he needs to put his foot down to say no more rent seeking activities of old!’ - Dr Jacob George CASSA CHIEF.

I do not wish to dwell too much on this rather controversial project!

I have spent enough time with qualified number of stakeholders to question its relevance and the need for duplicity!

Already the allegations are endless.

The controversial e-kesihatan programme was supposed to be implemented in October 2007 but timely interruption and protest resulted in a rethink.

My sincere advice to good friend and newly minted Transport Minister Ong Tee Keat is please do what you have done best in your political career – ‘the facilitation of real investigation and discussion on the entire program, the need for it, the cost, the players, the allegations that it is a gravy train and serves private interest!”

It must be done by individuals with a reputation of unchallenged integrity and dedication to the nation, the stakeholders and ultimately consumer interest!

As we all know the said program makes it mandatory for commercial drivers to undergo health screening, is implemented but many unanswered question has arisen that has to be answered honestly and not politically!

As it stands I am certain it is like many other ‘programs’ initiated that may serve the financial interest of the politically connected, their relatives, some retiring civil servant, some politician’s mistress or bimbo and in other words another ‘BARISAN NASIONAL RENT SEEKING OPERATION?’

It is clearly on the cards if implemented each driver would have needed to pay RM80 to a company outsourced by the Road Transport Department to have the screening done and based on the track record of ‘outsourcing in Malaysia’ – nothing more need to be said!

Go to fullsize image‘a foolish insensitive idiot - no less no more!’

‘Ini satu lagi kerja si-bodoh biadap barat!’

How else can you explain the arrogance and insensivity of those behind the irresponsible act of airing online a film entitled “Fitna!”

Dutch Parliamentarian Geert Wilders should have known better!

It is unfortunate that yet again those behind this heinous act portray Islam as a religion advocating extremism and violence, which is misleading, erroneous, disrespects a major religion – Islam - and the sensitiveness of our brothers/sisters in the Muslim world!

Wilder should have known better that his actions have caused hurt, anxiety, anger not only to believers but all religious and peace loving communities of the world!

One would have thought the Dutch would have been more conscious in view of their stint in Indonesia and this part of the world!

I appeal to the Dutch government to take punitive sanctions on this Parliamentarian and distance themselves from his rather idiotic and foolish stance!

One should never forget the cardinal rule – no one should tarnish the image and beliefs of any religion under the notion of freedom!

That is foolishness to the brim!

I call upon the Malaysian government to now boycott all products from Holland and serve a warning to their representative here in Kuala Lumpur!

We should also recall our Ambassador!

SELANGOR WATER DEAL AND LEGAL ACTION

March 29, 2008 on 2:36 pm | In General | Comments Off

Go to fullsize image‘Selangor Consumer interest come first!’ - CASSA CHIEF Dr Jacob George

I want to thank all those who have called and supported our efforts at dealing with this matter.

Yes, the Consumers Association of Subang and Shah Alam, Selangor(CASSA) has urged the federal government to review the water deal between the Selangor state government and Puncak Niaga Holdings Sdn Bhd in the public interest!

Since ‘time is of the essence’ - the earlier the better but if the government fails to react to this public call then it must not blame consumers if they decide to test the legality of the said contract and its provisions!

This is crucial since the Menteri Besar of Selangor has already gone on record that the said agreement is certainly not fair to Selangor consumers or the state!

So we will seek an appointment with the Selangor MB and seek his views and concerns on this matter.

If there is a positive move towards a review in the interest of consumers we will be pleased to let the matter rest!

If not - we will address the issues, accordingly.

As we all know - the said agreement is entered by Puncak Niaga Holdings Bhd (PNHB), Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) and the Selangor state government - on the operation and maintenance of water treatment plan in Sungai Sireh.

It was inked by state secretary Ramli Mahmud on March 7, the eve of polling day.

As we all know - the next day, the state government fell into the hands of PKR, DAP and PAS. Former menteri besar Dr Mohd Khir Toyo subsequently denied any knowledge about the agreement in the mass media.

dr jacob george 270308 cassa statement on water dealAs a result, we have received hundreds of phone calls from Selangor consumers regarding this issue.

This deal which was signed before the election had raised the issue of legality, of an abuse of power, or a lack of transparency. As a result we duly and in a right spirit feel that there is something amiss in this deal!

As such, in all fairness CASSA is supporting the call by newly minted Selangor Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim to review the concession agreement but the review must be done for public interest!

We are pleased that MB Khalid has also dismissed the claims by Energy, Water and Telecommunications Minister Shaziman Abu Mansor that the agreement is still valid.

I ask in all fairness - Is it a fair deal?

I question whether the deal is fair to the consumers of Selangor.

Or does it protect the interest of certain politicians, their hangers on, and various business interest and has a very real motive of profiteering?

We must remember Malaysians are hurting from the disparities and various rise in the cost of living!

If our appeal for a review is ‘pooh poohed’ we have no other remedies but to turn to court - we will apply for leave to initiate a class action in the public interest and to protect consumer rights and interest!

The said legal suit will be ‘people-funded’ and this will show that the public is supporting this cause.

We do not want to drag this issue.

If there is a review taking into cognizance the consumer interest - we will abide by it and move forward to make sure there are no more issues on the table.

It is important however that agreement pursued by any quarter must protect the ‘rights and interest’ of consumers and we have had enough where only the interest of lobbyists, politicians/brokers and concessionaires are taken into consideration.

Those days of power abuse are over - period!

For the record, I have not yet heard of any review prior to this and water supply was privatised on Jan 1, 2005, with Syabas being responsible for distribution in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

Syabas is 70 percent owned by Puncak Niaga, with the balance owned by the Selangor government.

Perhaps, what we need is a more transparent look at these agreements and the interests of which they serve!

I think this humble request from MB Khalid, Selangor Consumers and I is not unreasonable!

MB KHALID’S INTERVIEW WAS A PR DISASTER!

March 28, 2008 on 12:55 am | In General | Comments Off

khalid ibrahim and squatters selangor setingganThree wrongs - on 1. asset & wealth declarations 2. on unethical levy of RM9.00 on foreignworkers and 3. the infamous and bad implementation of ‘zero squatter policy

As voters, as senior, experienced public policy analysts and professionals, we are without doubt shocked at the comments made in the Malaysiakini interview by the new Selangor Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim (see pix left)!

I had actually called up my friends at Malaysiakini to check if there was any ‘mistake’ in the said interview but the video taken of the interview clearly showed that this first interview by Khalid Ibrahim was a public relations disaster!

I am shocked on all scores!

First after making a pre election promise on the declaration of assets – a hallmark of transparency - by incoming executive councilors, the MB for some ‘inexplicable reasons’ made an about turn stating that there was ‘reservations’ by certain exco members!

This is utterly stupid!

Can we have their names please so that we can continue to monitor those who are having ‘reservations’ and it is good if they can resign from being Selangor EXCO since it comes with responsibility and need to be accountable and transparent to the public!

Are the voters in Selangor going to see another round of ‘about turns and major screw ups’ to reinforce that we may have made a drastic mistake in voting all these candidates in Selangor who are beginning to behave like the ‘old hands’ that we disposed of during the 12th GE on March 8th 2008!
Go to fullsize imageSecondly, I was also totally flabbergasted to hear Khalid’s proposal to implement a RM9 monthly levy for each foreign worker in Selangor, which I had already stated in my interview with several mainstream media and TV news group when asked to comment on the MB’s statement as ‘improper!’

It was a shocking suggestion which showed his lack of knowledge on the issues pertaining to the Human Resources Ministry and its schemes nationwide and more so that such issues come under a scheme under the purview of the federal government and not the state government.

Khalid’s statement showed clearly that he was uninformed to ‘put it rather politely’ about the separation of powers and responsibilities between the federal and state governments.

To put it rather bluntly, again - it is not the responsibility of state governments to address issues under the purview of the federal government!

Foreign workers come to work in this country with work permit approvals and levy payments made to the Malaysian government!

The two ministries that monitored this are the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Human Resources Ministry!

MB Khalid must remember and be advised that in the first place foreign workers from Indonesia, Bangladesh, Nepal, India, Vietnam, Cambodia and other ’source countries’ are employed in areas in what we would consider low-skilled, labor-intensive, industries like construction, plantation, agriculture, manufacturing and the service sectors!

Khalids idea of skills training for Selangor interest is good and there is no reason why the state cannot work closely with the Human Resources Ministry in their already well set up training programs!

The Human Resource Ministry officials are always everready to help and assist and is one proactive ministry led by dedicated, honest, good men and women!

Anyway back to the issue - the actual amount of levy payments depends on the sector they are going to be employed, be it - manufacturing, construction, agriculture, services or plantation!

So it could be anything from RM400/++- to RM1930.00/++.

For the record - approvals today are only given to employers if the Ministry of Human Resources is satisfied that there is a real need for workers and the said employer or sector had expired all avenues of gaining local workers!

Employers have to furnish evidence and documentary proof of this!

It is on a needs basis and important to the country!

What is the use of having foreigners coming to Malaysia to invest and set up business if they cannot be given employees to run the sector!

Investors might as well go off to Thailand, Cambodia, China or Vietnam to set up shop!

So it would be pretty foolish for the Selangor state government to get into an issue that is actually not under her purview!

Actually, the federal government is already on cue to reduce the dependence on foreign workers but at the same time it had to take into account the interests of employers and industries especially industries that are helping our exports!

Khalid may not be briefed about this but allow me to inform him that the Human Resources Ministry has already established more than 26 skills training centers nationwide which run almost over 40 courses to enable youths to acquire skills.

And the last thing we need is duplication and an over run of costs!

The third irritant was certainly – ‘one that takes the cake’ – the issue of ‘zero-squatters’ policy that former Menteri Besar Mohd Khir Toyo barked loud about citing it was in “due recognition of the previous government’s policy!”

What rubbish!

To add to insult – may we know from Mohd Khir Toyo exactly which idiots from around the globe wanted to adopt Selangor’s controversial ‘zero squatters policy’ and the controversial manner in which it was implemented which was an abuse of state power and one that must be handed better by the new government in view of various sensitivities and community fallouts!
We must have a policy that looks at the homeless, the marginalized in out midst, the issue of the need for low and medium costs houses especially for the victims of fragmented estates and the urban poor!

We need to look at ways to preserve the balance of upholding law and order – and – social responsibility – between the rights of landowners while assisting the homeless and squatters!

And you do not need the state to act as the ‘movers and shakers’ of the dispute between a private land owner and the squatters!

The homeless and squatters need not be terrorized like they were by the old hands in Selangor!

There are enough terror stories in regard that and the allegations of the changing of millions of ringgit in kickbacks to certain facilitators!

The fact remains – what we saw in Selangor was mind boggling when issues of private land, squatters or temples were concerned and it must not be repeated!
Go to fullsize imageThe role of the state is clear – they need to exercise their power sensitively and not in the manner the ‘TOYO”  Government did which is an embarrassment to the nation who participated in the international habitat conferences by the United Nations and boasted of adopting Agenda 21!

It must be remembered – voters are watching how the DAP is running Penang, how PAS is running Perak and of course, PKR Selangor!

We have to accept that there have been some hiccups, some shortcomings but these are not massive and in time with the back up and support from us can be fine tuned!

It is quite clear that many who were elected in the last GE are not experienced but it is not a disaster provided one ropes in the right person with the right advice to address issues of the state!

I sincerely hope there will not be further statements that expose aparent ‘political misunderstanding on the sphere of state and federal jurisdiction!’

The new Selangor administration cannot afford another set of boo boos and slip ups and I say this rather sincerely!

WATER DEAL – FEDERAL GOVT MUST DO THE RIGHT THING OR FACE CONSUMERS IN COURT!

March 27, 2008 on 9:23 am | In General | Comments Off

Go to fullsize image‘GODS BLESSINGS TO MAN MANIPULATED TO REAP PROFITS FOR THE CORRUPT?’

It is fundamental an issue of one’s basis right, an accepted norm in any democratic society yet many are just politicizing the matter or making sheer stupid statements!

For arguments sake, let us take the ‘high moral ground’ (pun intended!) of the infamous Energy, Water and Communications Ministry and individuals associated with the ‘old administration’ who have described as valid, the water deal inked by the former state government and Puncak Niaga Holdings Bhd!

Never mind the controversies behind the issues, the denials and counter denials or even the claims and counter claims made by personalities of the deposed government of Selangor or their political appointees!

Let us leave their ‘doublespeak, apparent absurdities and denials which in all fairness to the reasonable man raises a multitude of questions!

Let us just concentrate on the question of morality and of ethics – is it right to bulldoze through an agreement that will have far reaching repercussions and consequences in costs and benefits to state and consumers signed in what must be described even politely as ‘clandestine and immoral’ just a day before the nations’ 12th general election?

Go to fullsize imageSelangor Menteri Besar, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim is also justified on cue in asking a pertinent question all consumers in the State of Selangor are asking – IS THE DEAL FAIR TO THE STATE AND PEOPLE OF SELANGOR?

He has our full undivided support on this matter!

Lets us cut the political crap – Minister Shaziman Abu Mansor who claims the agreement stood, unless the National Water Services Commission (SPAN), as the regulatory body, decided to nullify it!

Not necessarily – Consumers if need be can take the matter to court and allow the Malaysian courts with the new wind of change blowing through it to decide and in the meantime take an injunction on all parties until the courts decide the matter!

For the record – the Consumers Association of Subang and Shah Alam Selangor (CASSA) lawyers are already ready to initiate proceedings!

They will be talking to the new administration very soon if truth and fairness does not emerge!

True – to many - it would be a brilliant course of action, a forum which will open up the Pandora box of all things ‘not right’, excessive, corrupt and manipulated in the state for the last few terms and make both the federal government and members of the previous State Government look pretty stupid for underestimating the morale and courage of Selangor consumers!

On the onset – the pertinent question will be what was the reason for fast tracking this deal a day before the elections where the signatories were the former state government and Puncak Niaga Holdings Bhd?

Already the statements recorded in the mainstream media especially the tabloids are quite embarrassing and it would be really foolish to be rather bullish to push it through under the present circumstances as litigation may embarrass unfairly the federal government under PM Abdullah Ahmad Badawi when the ‘movers and shakers’ and those who certainly expected to benefit from this agreement were mainly from within the state!

At best – my two cents worth of advice is – all parties back off!

MB Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim can appoint a team to review the said agreement to ascertain if the rights and interest of the State of Selangor and Selangor Consumers are protected and whether the said contract is a fair and equitable deal!

Elements to look for will be certainly whether there were elements of PROFITEERING on the part of the players at the expense of Selangor Consumers!

There is enough of this all around the country and if this is plainly in the affirmative in the SELANGOR WATER DEAL – it is only right to re-negotiate in the public interest!

Any thing less is unacceptable, immoral and distasteful!

I am certain the ‘political havoc and embarrassment’ that the federal government has been experiencing since March 8 is enough!

There is no necessity to open another bitter front of conflict!

My advice Shaziman Abu Mansor – is plainly – Lets renegotiate and have an agreement that is fair to all parties!

Your move!

GOVERNMENT SHOULD CUT ALL FORMS OF WASTAGE NOW!

March 26, 2008 on 3:31 pm | In General | Comments Off

Go to fullsize image‘govt motto should be cut wastage NOW!’ - Dr Jacob George.

GOVERNMENT MUST PLAY ITS ROLE IN PROTECTING CONSUMERS!

As the situation the world over changes, as recession hits several countries including the US - and property and housing sector collapses, let alone the slow pace of foreign direct investments (FDI), we Malaysians must be thankful to hear ‘sweet news’ at lest for now - that fuel and gas prices will remain unchanged for the moment!

For example the price of wheat grain has gone up from I think USD265/metric tonne on 30 March 2007 to the present USD973/per metric tonne (as at 15 February).

An increase of maybe 3.67 times and the net result of this was the price of noodles, flour, biscuits and bread going up!

For the record, fuel is now at USD116/barrel.

If you remember well it was about USD68/barrel when we last had a price hike at the pump prices.

I am certain we may not be able to do much with the global price increase but we can do our part for our people!

Both the PM Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and the second Finance Minister Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop have rightly echoed that as far as the present prices go they are to remain while there was no decision to increase gas price at this point of time.

But I differ from one point - if there is an increase, it is pertinent that the government must ’squeeze Tenaga Nasional Bhd and the others with obese profits’ so that the rights and interests of the people in dire straits due to price over-runs in the marketplace is protected!

I must in all humility reinforce and remind our leaders that ultimately Malaysians are not he lest bothered about your projections and statistics on the economic outlook, the number of the corridors or other multi billion ringgit projects (some without primary legally required planning approvals?) you launch or others  and the percentages you cite on how brilliantly the nation is doing!

That to them is sheer poppycock!

Ultimately what Malaysian consumers desire is an answer to their market woes, answers to their inability to make ends meet while the big GLCs and all others holding monopolies boast how much their profits are!

zakaria deros mansion complete 161007 pool‘monument of the late Zakaria Mat Deroas abuse of power and of alleged corruption?’

We certainly have not forgotten the politicians either living beyond his/her means, of corruption unhindered, or the wastage of public funds on things that do not really matter – landscape, specially designed lamp posts, renovations, coats, jackets, silk batik, shirts t-Shirts for launchings and ceremonies and the continued purchase of items unnecessary without a well ordained appropriation committee of trusted men and women looking at demands and approving only if it is necessary!

Without which it is pure unadulterated hypocrisy to ask others to tighten their belts – what is there to tighten – people will stave next!

This disparity must be dealt with political will not half truths and rhetoric!

If this continues watch out for the second and third wave of - - ‘MAKKAL SAKTHI’ - People Power!

PRICE CONTROLS - CONSUMER ADVOCATE SUPPORTS MINISTER SHAHRIR’S REVIEW PLANS!

March 24, 2008 on 7:28 pm | In General | Comments Off

Go to fullsize image‘certain to initiate much needed changes and an open style of leadership’ - Dr Jacob George

As I stated the same over Astro’s hit program ‘Perspektif Kita’ only last month, I cannot but be glad to note the same observations from the new domestic trade and consumer’s affairs minister, Shahrir Abdul Samad that the government’s price-control system which is designed to suppress the cost of essential goods is “a joke!”

It is a joke, since at one end we are giving out large subsidies to keep prices down, while some beneficiaries of the subsidies are plainly sabotaging the system by facilitating smuggling activities across the border, where the prices for the same items are far higher and finally instead of being realistic and allowing market conditions and forces to rule we politicize the marketplace through private and secret pacts and deals which do not work – period!

We already have seen the anger and fall out from the electorate in the just concluded 12th General Election!

It is plain and simple – subsidies do not work!

As such I cannot but give notice of my sincere and utmost support to the minister in his attempt to bring about sweeping changes the way consumerism is advocated in Malaysia!

Shahrir desire to start with a sweeping review of the expensive system of subsidies and price controls is right on cue!

It is a fact known to all in the learned field that price controls was just for public relations purposes, it did not serve any real purpose.

As such the time is now for a real review of the 21 food items that are only the Price Control List and also the way we manage subsidy for items like petrol, diesel and gas!

It is time for change real change that we can believe and be involved in to spearhead real protection for the rights and interests of Malaysian consumers!

HIGH PRIORITY THAT WE HELP OUR NATIONS PENSIONERS SAYS JG!

March 24, 2008 on 12:07 pm | In General | Comments Off

‘your concerns under our radar we assure you!’ Dr Jacob George.

I have written on this before and quite recently but this is extremely urgent and needs action that should have come many years ago!

It is true that I still get several telephone calls daily from anxiety filled pensioners in the country!

I cannot deny that in the past many of my relatives, friends and former teachers had also approached me with various ‘horror stories’ even recently during my post election tour of Kedah, Penang, Perak and Selangor!

But I was under a mistaken impression that our pensioners were alright!

And that thought got a severe beating when I was approached by a team of pensioners recently who shared their agony with me!

Go to fullsize imageI had stated that I will address this issue with the first Minister of Finance, yes in my book, none other, than the competent and hardworking Tan Sri Nor Yaacob (see pix left) who is always sensitive, helpful and mindful of people’s needs!

To start their tales of agony – was their claim that the Malaysian government had shortchanged them for many decades and that a revision of salary or salary readjustments were only done 2007.

To them it was a political cum electing stunt if true it was disgusting!

I am advised that all government pensions are calculated for 25 years of service only.

This is despite the fact that many among the pensioners do work for considerably longer.

They say that a person who has worked for 32 years should be getting a pension of about RM2, 000 but instead he/she is only paid RM1, 220.

They claim there is a short change of RM780 which according to my mathematical calculation that over seven years of government service is wiped out!

The situation they claim is so severe and dehumanizing that many pensioners is forced to seek re-employment.

I am a bit troubled as if this group of former senior government servants cannot make hands meet how would others especially the smaller pension earners, more so in comparison, when active bodies earning more are suffering in view of the excallating costs of essential goods and services!

How will they put their children through school or college, or children who cannot find jobs readily and still reliant on their parents?

What about the continued unending costs of rising prices?

And certainly, the costs of healthcare for those in this age group?

And those without healthcare insurance which is the majority?

I am told that apart from this, this target groups also get a raw deal in the repayment of housing loans.

They allege that more than half their gratuity is taken for their housing loan.

Which automatically means that the principal loan sum is reduced but no recalculation is done as is the norm when we deal directly with the banks!

Perhaps, something is really amiss and we need to put to paper a plan of action or memorandum and highlight these views and feedbacks to the incoming Finance minister!

Without a change in the calculation and proactive assistance I am certain Malaysian pensioners will be hard hit as prices and costs of living are expected to skyrocket post Election 2008!

That includes – also necessities such as petrol, transport, pharmaceuticals and off-the-counter medicines.

I am certain something can be achieved and urge these friends to give me some time to engage in more discussions with my team and address these issues with the person most qualified to provide solutions!

Your needs and concerns are under our radar we assure you!

TIME HONEST LEADERS TOOK POSITIONS OF RESPONSIBILITY TO SPUR POLITICAL REJUVENATION IN MALAYSIA.

If you thought the ‘recent whacking’ the component parties of the Barisan Nasional got would have facilitated real soul searching and a holistic change that one can believe in, you are wrong!

Instead of reading the aspirations for real change of the today’s mindset of voters and others in the middle and senior categories who changed their ‘voting preferences’  from traditional ‘safe mentality patterns’ most of the parties are still dealing with the aftermath of the elections disaster with the motto – ‘its business as usual’ – same old polemics, excuses, threats, same old politicians trying to justify their relevance and involvement when any level headed person will honestly tell them - it was time they retired from active politics!

So how can one then win back community’s trust?
Some have said that they know the electorate but then why did they fail so miserably!

It was shameful the manner incumbent candidates got the ‘whacking one got’ and from ‘political lightweights’ who were mere ‘first timers’ who were taking part in the 12th General Elections encountering an uneven playing field and against a media that was playing a ‘major suck up of the establishment’ and distorting ‘facts and figures!’

As a result, under this context those who should have retired long ago stayed on unrelenting in their respective political offices stubbornly refusing to acknowledge that the political ground under them have shifted drastically!

This despite hearing for the first time in Malaysia a ‘united voice’ calling on them to leave the political scene coming repeatedly and if this is not a resounding message of no-confidence in the manner how political office and issues are dealt with - I wonder what is.

Certainly the political psychopaths that surround today’s political leadership on a limb, the spin masters, the political hangers on, these corrupted individuals will continue to sing the usual mantra of how relevant it is for the status quo to be maintained but their call is for personal self interest and survival rather than for one’s community!

As such, if there is going to be a rejuvenation the continued presence of the ‘rejected politicians’ is a liability; a sore reminder of their failure and added with their political baggage, mediocrity, and invested self-interest that will taint any supposed revitalization process.

One need not be a scholar from Oxford, Cambridge and of course the spinmasters latest ‘from Harvard’ to realize this plain reality and truth!

In all honesty - leaders who have dominated the limelight with their ‘new faces of yes men in tow’ all these years and, by extension, systematically blocking the infusion of dynamic, articulate, progressive, and new blood into their respective parties, the sincere but independent minded types should leave!

If there is no real change and change that one can believe in, we the voters have no problems as we have other political alternatives and it is clear from the recent elections that voters irrespective of being Malay, Chinese or Indians or other pri-bumiputras have decided to experiment with alternative approaches!

After all the candidates matter and so does the party and whether that said party really supports transparency, accountability and good governance saying a loud ‘nay’ to corruption, nepotism, cronyism, the fettering of institutions and of ‘law, order and justice’ – virtually an absolute abuse of the electoral process and of political power!

If after all these – today leadership and the politicians fail to read the ‘signals from the ground’ it is to their continued political demise!

One thing is for certain - the political shift has already taken place in Malaysia in the twelfth general election where there was a ‘true awakening’ of the communities that neither UMNO nor its component parties and the subservient and certainly dishonest electronic and print media have a monopoly on truth or on assessment of who is truly a quality and conscientious candidate or party to represent the people and take leadership positions in future government!

HINDRAF 5 TO BE FREED UNCONDITIONALLY?

March 23, 2008 on 12:32 pm | In General | Comments Off

Prayers have continued in temples, churches and many prayers houses and among various religious groups for the unconditional release of the Hindraf 5!

I am advised that there is a move towards their release unconditionally to be initiated by our beloved Prime Minister, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi!

Go to fullsize imageI am advised by reliable sources that the PM has taken cognizance of the various appeals, feedbacks released from a diverse cross section of Malaysian demograph including I and views in this blog!

If indeed this is true - it will be a landmark decision and one that spurs efforts at holistic reconciliation in Malaysia!

If indeed this is true, on behalf of all MALAYSIANS I want to say - THANK YOU PM SIR!

WHY IS MALAYSIA GETTING INVOLVED IN THE INTERNAL AFFAIRS OF TAIWAN?

March 22, 2008 on 3:29 pm | In General | Comments Off

‘Wisma Putra (below pix) needs to be rather careful with their statements in today’s sea of issues!

Go to fullsize image

I am surprised that once again, Malaysia has felt that it was ‘in her interest’ to comment and take a position on matters outside our ‘real arena of interest and issue!’

I am surprised that a country that gets continuously agitated and angry when outsiders make comments on our domestic issues, double standards and hypocrisy are now ‘self righteously’ voicing opposition to the what she claims to be a “provocative” move by Taiwan to hold a referendum today on its United Nations’ membership, stating again without substance and evidence that it may jeopardize peace and stability in the region and beyond.

What peace and stability are we taking about? And whose interest and needs are we championing here?

I am also surprised at the tone of the statement by Wisma Putra - that Malaysia is opposed to such a ‘provocative move’ and reaffirm the `One China’ policy?’

For the record, Taiwan which has been self governed had announced plans to hold the referendum on whether to seek UN membership under the name “Taiwan”.

Of course - the ‘almighty Beijing’ has warned that Taiwan is ‘courting danger’ the same kind of fear she puts on the ‘helpless’ in Tibet also in the international news which has received absolutely no condemnation from the same sources who felt ‘a sudden knee jerk’ feeling to pick on an issue leaving out another equally disturbing and presently receiving international condemnation, attention and scrutiny!

Of course, the ‘Wisma Putra apologist’ will say that they are justified in putting out the said statement that I am disputing since Malaysia is a member of the current General Committee of the UN General Assembly and in the past Malaysia had spoken against the proposal for the issue of Taiwan’s membership to the UN to be included in the agenda of the UN General Assembly.

But is it really necessary for Malaysia to get involved in an issue where more than 17 million Taiwanese are deciding in polls today while choosing a successor to President Chen Shui-bian?

The vary fact that Taiwan’s ruling party planned to hold the referendum alongside the presidential elections, ignoring warnings from the United States of America and China should show us that the people who really have the locus are deciding what is best for their interest and it is certainly not for Malaysia to put her face in an issue which is none of our interest in the first place!

It is their call - whatever they wish - its theirs to decide whether pro-China or another!

I am certain we have our ‘fair share of problems’ and it is just a matter of time someone out there points this out to us so that we will not be in ’such eager mood’ to take a rather high moral stand when deep down, we are also floating in double standards!

So what if China has claimed sovereignty over Taiwan since the Chinese civil war ended in 1949?

So what if Beijing has threatened to use force if the island formally declares statehood?

I am certain the days of ‘such obsession’ is long gone and nations all over need to re-look at the ‘domestic and foreign policy initiatives’ as not to look rather stupid, full of deceit and sheer hypocrisy!

More now, since there can easily be an all out boycott of the Olympics in China even if cosmetically both the US and the EU have taken a rather ’soft stand for now!’

Got my drift Wisma Putra?

RESPECT THE DECISION OF VOTERS - DEFEATED POLITICIANS TOLD (Pt 2)

Penang - is still a beautiful island and its people loving , kind and friendly and for me the island state does hold so much nice and sad memories! - Dr Jacob George

It was an interesting week!

Many things seem to be taking place in Penang and among the concerns was the possibility that the sacred MAULIDUR - RASUL CELEBRATIONS would be high jacked by ‘political desperadoes’ from the group that lost control of the State of Penang on March 8!

SMS were flying and even the tourists and retired civil servants I was chatting with on the Island and mainland Butterworth and Seberang Jaya were caught in the hype!

There was really anxiety among the people and I can understand why coming from the island state.

I left my car in the hotel at Batu Feringghi and traveled with a retired diplomat friend on his heavy motorbike – quite exciting really!

We rode from the beach front, along Tanjong Tokong (where I lived before) past Cantonment road, where I worked several decades ago when I was with the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) and Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) the city square, along George Town and surrounding areas – things were pretty quiet!

At the Kapitan Keling Mosque – I got down as I saw several of those I recognized and among them, also those who I recognized in that unpleasant and unbecoming Friday KOMTAR demonstration, but, here they looked subdued and tamed!

I walked up to several exchanging greetings and pleasantries.

I walked up to the security team gathered to maintain ‘law and order and chatted!

The Light Strike Force was there, certainly members of the special branch and I noticed things were pleasantly quiet and religiously focused!

The religious celebrations and procession started and ended without any untoward happenings!

Praise GOD!

I was glad and know that those in PUTRAJAYA and those entrusted to maintain ‘law and order’ had done their homework (I do not have to go into details!)

To those we entrust our security I say – Thank You!

If anyone had earlier planned mischief – they were certainly spoken to – they knew the drill!

And rightly backed off – it is now time to invest in ‘a plan of action’ to do great and good things for the people and all must wok together in this effort!

Those who won must be careful about their comments and policy statements and those who lost willing to work with dedication and sincerity for the rights and interest of the community.

One must remember 5 years is really a very short tenure!

Unity in diversity is the essence of real democracy and I pray that will be fulfilled in Penang for a start!

RESPECT THE DECISION OF VOTERS - DEFEATED POLITICIANS TOLD! (Pt.1)

Go to fullsize image‘PM & DPM MUST BRING TO BOOK THOSE OUT TO CREATE CHAOS & PUBLIC DISORDER AFTER THEIR POLITICAL DEFEATS’ - DR JACOB GEORGE

One thing is certain - there is ’hustle and bustle’ and ’great expectations’ among many, who welcomed the new government in four states!

This is among the observations’ I found out as I did my ’walk-a-bout’ in four states notably, Selangor, Kedah, Perak and Penang, where I was born, meeting grassroots communites, leaders, civil society members, NGOs, civil servants, retired civil servants, educationists, businessmen and tourists!

From what I have learnt these few days - only those who lost political power seem to be sulking and orchestrating various forms of political mischief and among them, the financing and organizing of demonstrations -’tunjok perasaan’, which is again is being counter productive as then the people will begin to blame the federal government for not acting against these clearly identified trouble makers!

In all four states - it is hoped that the respective state government will put into gear an administration that is really ‘people friendly’, accountable, transparent and serve the states with distinction!

Go to fullsize imageI am told especially in Penang - the roads, drains and garbage that were neglected are suddenly being attended to!

Approvals that were gathering dust are now receiving serious attention!

Penang’s notorious ‘jaga kereta boys’ are also missing!

Civil servants in these 4 states are suddenly also courteous and conscious of ‘time management’ instead of the old habit of spending more time in the canteen, doing private work or reading magazines especially brochures from various direct selling companies!

Political personalities alleged to be involved in ‘various forms of kickbacks’ and in the midst of the establishment of various forms of non licensed business along the tourist belt and other places are now hiding.

These former powerful warlords, ‘untouchables’ and among them, ’one name’ kept coming out repeatedly in Tanjong Tokong, Tanjong Bungah, Teluk Bahang and Batu Feringhi!

I am told this particular individual - an alleged ’one man approval machine’ is also ’sulking and in fear’ of being now, investigated by the new authorities!

However, one common anxiety and fear among residents, retired civil servants, government officials and tourists is the blatant attempt by defeated politicians fueling tension ‘along racial lines’ in the states of Selangor and Penang!

Local grassroots leaders seem to have identified the ’agent provocateurs’ and many have decided that they will as a grassroots group initiate an expose of these individuals if ‘they do not back off’ from their mischief!

Among the actions proposed is a memorandum to the Prime Minister and UMNO President to take action against those identified in the public interest!

Some of the comments from people who I spoke to are as follows:

‘Dr Simon Lee’ - 55:

‘The PM and the Police must be consistent! If you can arrest the 5 Hindraf members under the ISA - why not members of your own political party who cannot come to accept the choice of the people via a democratic election and are now fueling anxiety and demonstrations in various states, where they have been defeated!

‘Pak Sheikh’ 66:

Today Penang people think differently. A Malay will vote for DAP or PKR, an Indian or Chinese for PAS and this is the new reality! What is the use of creating chaos? We the poor suffer? These politicians previously ruled and what have they done for us really? Let us give a chance to the new group and if they serve the raayat honestly they will be retained. If not they face the same verdict in 5 years time.

Gopinathan 44:

We must respect the people’s votes and allow those elected to function. If those who lost create problems that shows they really don’t’ know what a democratic practice is really. They are just greedy for power and wealth. And the PM must act against them.

It is my sincere hope that all parties, be they, the media, the new government or the new opposition groups and among them defeated political warlords of old - they all must accept the peoples’ verdict and allow Malaysian democracy to take its course and root!

If certain parties continue financing and instigating tensions and chaos and the federal government remains silent I am told there will be another wave of ’people power - Makkal Sakthi’ where people will then initiate a nationwide boycott of business outlets and even certain electronic and print media belonging to those identified to be in ‘cahoots with troublemakers’ and not respect the peoples’ choice!

In Kedah, Penang, Perak and Selangor ’the political landscape’ is fast changing with thousands waiting to join either DAP or PKR!

Go to fullsize imageI am also aware that equally, many irritated Penangites are waiting to join a boycott against Nasi kandar operators and other business, after the recent protest at Komtar which created ‘an atmosphere of fear!’

I remember receiving many mobile calls asking me to assist to bring the news to Putrajaya for their intervention!

But the Penang police did well to contain the situation and kudos to them!

In fact, I am aware of the Malaysian Muslim Restaurant Operators Association president, K.K. Sihabutheen’s statement that some members had complained of poor business following the circulation of an SMS, calling on the people to boycott their stalls.

As a Penang born, I am only too aware that there are hundreds of nasi kandar outlets in Penang alone, as the Indian Muslim fare is popular among people of all races there and any major boycott will hit their business badly and for that reason alone, it is important that those in this community do their bit to foster peace, goodwill and an acceptance of the people vote on March 8, 2008 by distancing themselves publicly from the acts of these ‘political thugs!’

They should go out in the ‘open and in public’ to state that they will not support any such initiatives that supports any form of unrest, public disorder and demonstrations - no matter how legitimate the organizers try ‘to spin it as!’

That they respect - operative word - RESPECT the peoples’ choice!

That is the essence of democracy!

If they come out with a common banner stating this and place it in all business outlets it will send a strong message to ‘trouble makers’ and ‘disgraced politicians’ that their actions will not be tolerated!

In short - the elections are over, lets all get down to work for the people!

Those previously ‘full time politicians’ now unemployed - I am certain you are ‘not as poor as you claim’ to be either!

What is important now is that, one now initiates ‘a plan of action’ to behave like a statesman, not a thug and regain the confidence of the people by sheer hardwork and zero tolerance for corruption!

Perhaps, this is also a good time to go for a pilgrimage and seek guidance, a holistic vision from the ALMIGHTY!

WATER AGREEMENT - SELANGOR MB SHOULD RESCIND AGREEMENT IN THE CONSUMERS INTEREST!

March 17, 2008 on 9:51 pm | In General | Comments Off

Go to fullsize image‘Selangor MB Khalid should rescind the said agreement in the consumers interest!’ say Dr Jacob George.

As the President of the Consumers Association of Subang and Shah Alam Selangor (CASSA), I want to congratulate Selangor’s newly appointed Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim for responding positively to calls for a comprehensive review of the rather controversial water supply agreement entered by the previous state government with two companies on the eve of the polling day!

I am certain that a comprehensive review of the said agreement - to operate, manage and maintain the raw water intake and the treatment plant at Sungai Sireh, Tanjung Karang may reveal a suspicious ’lopsidedness’ in favour of certain quarters with an interest in the concession agreement!

After all, this has been the ‘age old manner’ of doing business in Malaysia and in fact, Selangor where the ‘concession agreements’ tends to give a questioning and unfair advantage to certain quarters at the expense of consumers!

The toll concessions are a classic example which are all still shrouded in ‘mystery and political doublespeak!’

In fact, the fact the MB Khalid has already noticed that there is ’some imbalance’ between the revenues to the state, the people and what enrichness those benefitting in the said concession is an interesting point to pursue comprehensively!

In fact, I call upon the MB Khalid to question all behind this agreement, which includes, the state secretary as well!

No stones should be left unturned and the raayat has the right to know the truth of any profiteering by any quarters at the expense of the state and the consumers!

In fact, in my mind it is just not the alleged lopsidedness of the said agreement alone that is causing anxiety but the date the agreement was signed between Puncak Niaga Holdings Bhd (PNHB), Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) and the Selangor state government!

According to reports the agreement was signed between the three parties and the federal government on March 7, 2008 - a day before the recent general election which is shocking!

The pertinent question being actually who signed it on behalf of the Selangor state government?

The state secretary has gone on record claiming he signed the said agreement but did he have the power to do?

As such, it is only right that the said agreement is rescinded and relooked with the consumers interest in mind!

The time has come for truth to be revealed and those behind this alleged unfair contract be made to account in the public interest!
