NEW UN MEASURES MAY HOLD KEY TO OUR FOOD SECURITY ISSUES.

NEW UN MEASURES MAY HOLD KEY TO OUR FOOD SECURITY ISSUES.

Whether you like it or not the fact is the global economy is now ridden with many problems but none more pressing than what is happening to food prices and issues pertaining to food security!

Like a scene from a ‘horror movie or Armageddon’ we have already witnessed food riots in Haiti, the Philippines, Ethiopia, Thailand and Indonesia and several other nations.
We have to accept the reality that world food prices have been rising over the years but what we are now seeing in these last few months ‘takes the cake’ as we now see a total spiraling of price controls!

According to reports and statistics during the last 12 months the average price of food has raised by 56%, with wheat rising by 92% and rice, the staple of half the world, by 96%!

This has given rise to all forms and shapes of anxiety and fear in the marketplace and in the hard hit poor communities living from day to day!
Though I must agree that many a problem initially came out of disparities and manipulation in the so called supply and demand but what we see now seems a lot more instability and volatility.

And if the governments do not interfere in trade, the price rise will bring a supply response, which will cause prices to level out of control.

My colleagues and I have not seen scenarios of such instability as this in the last 35 years!
We have to accept that we are to blame as the demand for food is rising as the world’s population increases and there is new prosperity in India and China.

With the scarce land for food cultivation or the high jacking of good fertile arable land for construction or the diversion of food for bio fuels - food security has been hard hit across the globe!

Added to this pain is the irresponsible and unethical increase in the production of biofuels in industrialized nations.
This has caused over 20% of corn and rapeseed production in developed countries to be diverted away from food.

So indeed, the news that UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon is due to announce details of new measures to tackle the global food crisis cannot but be welcomed!

I am advised by friends at the United Nations to expect some form of announcement after a meeting of UN aid agency chiefs in the Swiss capital of Berne.

The said high powered meeting is crucial since the UN estimates up to 100 million of the world’s poorest people now need food aid due to soaring food prices.
We have to face new realities where the cost of staple foods like rice, grain, oil and sugar are all at least 50% higher than they were this time in 2007!

We are all advised by sources that in the near future alone the World Food Programme needs an extra $755m (£380m), as its original budget for 2008 will not be enough to cover rising prices and increased demand which clearly shows the difference and challenge we face!

As I see it we must be focused and look at the big picture.

The real challenge we face is to see how all of us can pool our resources, political will and intelligentsia to promote sustainable agriculture, tackle climate change, and at the same time ensure enough food is produced all around.

This is not easy as various grouses are already stated and views and opinion have continued to differ on a plan of action that is widely needed to address this problem.

Why go so far as I am told by the same contacts that even at the UN - opinions are divided.
bio fuel production - controversial!

Some have called for called for the production of biofuels to be suspended, claiming they push food prices up.

While others believe bio fuels are key to providing alternative energy for the future.

To make matters more complex and fussy World trade talks have been stalled for years because of divisions between rich and poor countries over agricultural subsidies.

We must all work in coordination and in togetherness.

Already tensions are spiraling out of control when a few countries across Asia like Thailand, Vietnam and India had suspended rice exports amid fears that insufficient domestic supplies could lead to acute instability.

It is time a select task force be appointed to look at the big picture, free of politics, private national greed or agenda – this must be a global response to issues of food security to save planet Earth!

PARLIAMENT OPENS - NOW WE SHOULD KNOW WHOSE FIT AND WHOSE NOT!

April 29, 2008 on 1:02 pm | In General | Comments Off

Several Malaysian politicians are a shameful lot – really a despicable lot!

Just look at the manner many reacted immediately after realizing they lost control of several states and of political power!

We heard of trucks going in and out removing documents and what have you?

We heard of documents being shredded and destroyed ‘in the tons’ with the assistance of civil servants who are ‘expected to be impartial and professional!’

We heard of monies being removed from associations and transferred elsewhere while at the same time the perpetuators of these heinous crimes give media interviews claiming there are ‘squeaky clean and above board’, that they already knew that the ruling government would lose and all such poppycock!

That is not all - these days!

Open any media medium all you see and read is their repeated bickering, imagined claims and grouses and not focused to see how they can make a difference, how they can be mediums of social proactive change, how they can contribute in the rebuilding of peoples’ trust, how they can be instruments of good governance, transparency, accountability, ethics, fair play, decency and of human dignity - in other words - instruments of God’s peace and goodwill!

A day does not go past without some call, some EGM some statements bickering and calling individuals to quit, it is either directed to PM Abdullah, to Minister of Federal Territories or of late, Hishammuddin Hussein!

For the record, Hishammuddin has apologized and it is time we acted like statesmen and go forward!

But the interesting thing is - their statements are tailored to look like they are huge but in reality come from just a few disgruntled and outdated politicians, politicians who in the past overstayed their welcome or others known for their abuse of power and corruption!

They real intention is to manipulate present grouses to push their personal agenda through - not - of the people, the nation or what’s pertinent!

No sir – it is all about their big fat political egos – that they have lost over 5 states in the last general elections and with it political power and with it their opportunity for continued subsidies of various forms and kinds, their chance of being part and parcel of the ‘gravy train’ of kick-backs running into millions of ringgit so that their families, hangers on, relatives, supporters and themselves included could continue living luxury lifestyles beyond the means by plain reliance on one’s honest wages and appointment!

But that is the reality in Malaysian politics and already on the fist day you already have a known ‘political frog’ distancing himself from the voting patterns of his party/political colleagues!

For the first time in the history of Malaysia – the Malaysian parliament has in its attendance parliamentarians who come from diverse backgrounds and some who should not be there in the fist place but thanks to the ‘political sentiments’ prior to GE12 – they got elected!

As my son stated it looked like old McDonald’s farm!

Now we will have to see if they can deliver and let alone whether you and I made the right decision in our vote to put them in Parliament or at the state assembly!

FOOD SECURITY CRISIS FORCES A RETHINK ON PAST POLICY MISTAKES!

April 28, 2008 on 1:07 pm | In General | Comments Off

’comprehensive policy needed to safeguard all our food producing land now!’

FOOD SECURITY CRISIS FORCES A RETHINK ON PAST POLICY MISTAKES!

We are today paying a heavy price for not standing up to ‘26 years of mistakes’ pertaining to focusing on making Malaysia a food producing nation rather than an Industrial country just to appetize the ego of one man who ran the nation with an iron fist!
We need to thank PM Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for plotting in a new course to make food first when he took over the nation!

So as expected, the global rising price of rice has today prompted discussions on food security, efforts to grow more rice, measures to stem rice smuggling and restrictions on conversion of agricultural land for other use!

Each and every measure that I appealed for so long now seeing debate and emphasis!

And it looks like the present international and national anxiety pertaining to food security has kept our Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister, Mustapa Mohamed rather preoccupied! (see pix below)

I am advised that he has yesterday advised the Kelantan state government not to indiscriminately approve applications for conversion of padi land for projects or settlements as it was important to prevent shrinking of padi land, which would only decrease rice production.

But the minister should know better!

He should direct his comments at the rest of Peninsula Malaysia rather than Kelantan alone!

Already comments coming from Terengganu, Pahang, Perlis, Kedah all show a speedy rethink of the issue as well, which is good!
I am saying this because his comments on indiscriminate conversion of fertile food growing land to construction and other infrastructure projects should have come more than a decade ago when ‘all and sundry’ were ‘licking up to their then sovereign leader’ who mounted a national industrization plan which virtually sidelined emphasis on food growing and issues pertaining to food security!

So to now say that we fear that indiscriminate conversion of padi land would pose a major problem for future generations in terms of price and supply of food seems to be a bit displaced if not ‘stupid’ – though a fact!

But I am glad that the said ministry has allocated RM14 million for rehabilitation of padi land which came under the jurisdiction of the Kemubu Agriculture Development Authority (KADA).

I am also overjoyed that KADA also proposes to provide additional fertilizer subsidy to farmers, estimated at between RM3 million and RM4 million for this is the exact response we need now nationwide not political bashing and rhetoric!

We must also address smuggling and this has to take a new direction for as I have no confidence in the old aged methods ‘at the border areas’ that are entrenched as it does not and cannot address smuggling – period!

Not when the reward to close ‘one eyes’ can run into the hundreds of thousands!

We need a new task force to be set up reporting directly to the Prime Minister and his deputy!

In my humble view, it is rather pertinent that the Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumers Affairs, Shahrir Abdul Samad be in task force as well!

A task force comprising of individuals who have a squeeky clean reputation from the Customs, Immigration, the UTK and selected qualified individuals from public policy and civil society groups!

This group should be given ‘unhindered power’ and the task of addressing smuggling in its multi dimensional sphere and to use whatever action needed to curtail once and for all this heinous activity without fear not favor!

We must exercise that in this forum - ‘no one is above the law!’

They should be given the authority to arrest any one, no matter how high or low, no matter who one is - even if one is a political gatekeeper, warlord or retired policymaker!

The present global crisis and food security issues should now impose on us to implement an agricultural land utilization policy!
The policy should empower strict protection of all fertile and food growing land, address the opening up of new areas for the same, have provisions to take back former food growing land, provide support of both subsidies and financial assistance to all stakeholders involved in the growing of food, and furthermore, use/rent unused land for the immediate growing of food crops and to prevent agricultural land from being converted for all forms of construction!

MAKE AG ACCOUNTABLE TO PARLIAMENT (Part 1)

April 26, 2008 on 10:22 am | In General | Comments Off

Take way the person who divert issues through racial overtones.I want to thank the numerous individuals which include two ministers, MPs who contacted me on my call for the Attorney General to be made accountable to Parliament as is the case in several countries!

Thank you for the support and for indicating that you are willing to assist in the proposed signature campaign as well.

Many have also stated that it was a timely call and in view of the announced ‘reforms’ PM Abdullah is reported to be initiating!

It is a fact that the manner in which AG’s office has operated for the last 27 years leaves many within and outside the corridors of the courts quite shocked and surprised.

Enough has already been stated on the allegations of abuse and corruption involving many politicians, enough has been stated about other high profile murders and killings, many still unsolved that it is becoming a sick joke and the ‘MOTHER OF ALL MURDERS’ the brutal slaying of Mongolian Altantuya Shariibuu which has the international spotlight on us!

And certainly – all the more with its ‘bizarre twists and turns!’

My 14 year old nephew and his many friends at school had their own theories and they are not far from what has been speculated along the corridors of power, the newsroom, the public domain, the coffee stalls and even inside taxis!

The interest goes across the board!

But when an analysis is done on all the high profile and ‘political cases’ – one thing does seem troubling!

There seems to be a pattern of some form of ‘third party interference and involvement.’

Whether this is the figment of one’s imagination, imagined or real it is a perspective that has to be dealt with immediately.

And the sooner we deal with this in line with the so called ‘reforms’ the better!

So I directed my humble appeal to Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to include the Attorney-General’s Chambers in the proposed reforms.

It is very simple! If you have an intention to have a first class judiciary, a first class Anti Corruption Agency, a first class of everything to facilitate that justice is seen to be done – then in all fairness include the AG’s Office in the reforms as well!

After all the AG’s Office is the one that decides to continue or discontinue an investigation and whether the case goes forward!

Basically, we are talking about accountability, good governance and transparency it is important that we amend the Penal Code in the next sitting of parliament and make the Attorney General accountable to Parliament.

So if there are issues to be deliberated and controversies cleared or questions to be asked why certain decisions were taken in the manner they were the AG can answer them in the highest law making jurisdiction in the country – the Malaysian Parliament!

I am certain there is nothing to fear of such a move provided all things are in order!

The push toward the reforms of the AG Chambers was necessary as no one has been able to question the AG on his reasons for taking certain decisions he has which raises more question than answers in the public domain and with this change – he has a platform, the perfect setting and forum to answer the questions.

This should stop various forms of rumor mongering and other statements made which are fabricated and purely having a political agenda.

We want nothing of that – all we seek is a reform that clearly facilitates a chain of command where the AG reports to Parliament – period!

As I had stated if PM Abdullah feels this call has no merit or support whatsoever, then we will show that there is strong support in the Malaysian landscape (Sabah & Sarawak included) for this call by organizing a signature campaign on a national level in cooperation with our large pool of friends, NGOs, community groups, civil society members, trade unions, religious groups, and certainly political parties that adhere to the principles that accountability, transparency and good governance is the hallmark of any righteous government!

And we have already started preminary discussions with these groups on the signature campaign for the AG Chambers to be reformed.

Actually after the March 8th General Elections results the more than ‘silent majority’ have indeed spoken against various abuse and excessiveness.

And they want change – change that we can believe in – and PM Abdullah has nothing to lose to be the one to initiate the much awaited reforms and put Malaysia where she rightly was before ‘political shenanigans and a dictator’ destroyed all ‘checks and balances’ so that they can run Malaysia for their own agenda and ego!

PM Abdullah will be long remembered and given the due recognition that has so far avoided him and his administration IF he indeed sees this reforms through!

The call now - make the Attorney General accountable to the Parliament as it cannot be pushed to another day!

DENGUE WATCH: DENGUE DEATHS - ENOUGH TALK JAIL OFFENDERS

April 25, 2008 on 3:27 pm | In General | Comments Off

’declare a ‘war on dengue’ says Dr Jacob George.

Are we proud of all these needless deaths and sufferings?

It is known to all and sundry how angry I have been with this matter from day one!

Having lost a dear friend, an Associate Professor/Eye Specialist at University Hospital (see earlier blog posting & writings) – a sincere dedicated and caring doctor I have all the reason to be since that needless death was in Subang Jaya – the concrete jungle of this part of Selangor!

It is a problem that does not seem to go away neither addressed in a manner that will put the ‘fear of GOD’ in those creating the fiasco!

Yes, I mean the construction and other sites that offer far too many areas for this scourge to continue unattended!

So it is again with sadness that we have to receive news that a total of 35 dengue deaths were reported nationwide from early 2008!

‘fogging alone not enough!’

Again I am not proud at the announcement by the Health Ministry’s disease control division that last week alone, one death was reported from 741 cases, with the highest being Selangor (327 cases) followed by Kuala Lumpur (89) and Johor (65)!

Yes indeed Selangor!

Mohd Khir Toyo’s ‘most developed state’ holds the distinction of being the dengue capital of the nation for several years now!

We must not forget that in comparison there were 38 deaths from 16,260 cases during the same period in 2007!

Let us be honest and state the ‘old tricks’ do not bring about results like urging members of the public to play their roles in containing the disease by destroying the breeding grounds for the dengue-carrying Aedes mosquito because in the first place it is not residents that are creating the problem!

The perpetrators of this problem are and have always being the construction and foreign worker’s residential sites (abandoned projects as well) – and the incompetence and apathy of enforcement agencies period!

So the Ministry of Housing and Local Government should immediately get off the ‘backsides and deep coma’ and initiate a nationwide blitz on all construction sites and other potential areas with the Immigration, RELA, Police and Media on entourage to get the nationwide attention these matters needs!

Then it would be brilliant!

The authorities should immediately arrest the Directors of the said companies and site supervisors using ‘emergency laws’ while shutting down all operations till the site is upgraded and all preventive measures put into place!

That will do the damage!

Flash the names of the companies that are breaking the law over the media too!

Basically what I am calling out from time immemorial is a ‘war on dengue’ which must include punitive sanctions on the above characters - period!

Not advisory, more pampering, more directives – we need drastic action!

If you cannot do this - the statistics on death and infection will continue to rise!

How many more need to die before we do something drastic?

We do not want to lose another person like the late Associate Professor Dr. Malika!

POLITICIANS MUST ACCEPT PRESENT POLITICAL LANDSCAPE CHANGES!

April 25, 2008 on 10:27 am | In General | Comments Off

 ’LKY should just shut up!’

POLITICIANS MUST ACCEPT PRESENT POLITICAL LANDSCAPE CHANGES!

Any fair and reasonable man would be agitated and upset at the manner and the way politicians in the Barisan Nasional are behaving in the light of Lee Kah Choon accepting new roles to serve the nation!

I have stated repeatedly that politics is not about party politics alone at the expense of the primarily need to serve!

And serve whom?

The people certainly!

We exist to serve and what is so wrong for a former Gerakan deputy general to accept a new role in assisting and serving the electorate?

Why should be create controversies, spins, a war of words upsetting all and sundry in the country?

Why are we so closed in our political thought waves that we cannot see beyond our selfish political borders and listen – certainly listen to the alternative voices that are emerging in the political landscape!

It is about change that we can all believe, a new era of politics where despite our political persuasions we can work together if that change is proactive and would bring benefits to the nation!

Why remain closed and repressive?

Unwilling to change for the better!

It is the same argument in parliament when if a member of the BN decides to address an issue in the wider political context or conscience he/she are totally screwed up by the so called whip!

He/she is politically ostracized, penalized and at times suspended for doing the right thing all because of a departure from political party stand!

We have seen it happening in Penang state assembly and we have seen its ugly head in Parliament!

We forget the vary essence of democracy – we are elected by the people to address their concerns not the party’s political agenda!

So forgive me if I think the grand old man of Gerakan is again over doing it!

Dr Lim Keng Yaik has unjustly criticized former protégé Lee Kah Choon for lacking principles by seeking greener pastures with the new Penang Pakatan Rakyat government.

First he accuses him than he says he is an opportunist and finally that it is no loss to the Gerakan!

Does it make sense? Of course not!

Sounds more like sore grapes!

Similar political ramblings we have heard from others in the same age bracket and political thought wave all refusing to accept present political reality and the total rejection of their respective parties.

Instead of renewing, reflecting, putting into motion a grand plan for political rejuvenation these politicians are still in ‘political comatose’ and ‘denial mode’ after the March 8th hammering and rejections unable to come to grips with the new era of Malaysian politics.

It is sad when individuals cannot and would not see beyond themselves.

Or when they continue to point fingers and bicker at each and every thing instead of accepting reality and moving forward!

Those who lost and lost big should now get off their back sides and move forward.

This is all the more crucial in the light of greater challengers facing us from the global stage!

LET’S BE REALISTIC – THERE IS NO QUICK FIX TO OUR FOOD SECURITY!

April 25, 2008 on 9:37 am | In General | Comments Off

‘we should start with making available more land for farming!’

LET’S BE REALISTIC – THERE IS NO QUICK FIX TO OUR FOOD SECURITY!

As I say these days everyone is an expert of food security!
Even paid writers!

But the fact remains – after more than 27 years of neglect and taking into cognizance new farming methods, opening new land for food, looking at subsidies and an assistance plan for farmers, analyzing the food production and logistics of import and distribution – things have gone sadly wrong but not that it is totally lost!

The present situation can be fixed!

And the present global conditions should only soar up a need to re-look at the DOHA talks and issues on the table and a price mechanism that protects those who put food on our table!
So I am in full agreement with Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister, Shahrir Abdul Samad that a suitable mechanism for the supply and distribution of food should be identified as part of the food security plan to ensure efficiency and price stability.

In the past we have been dealing with ‘knee jerk reactions’, ‘quick fixes’ which were more for political considerations and agenda than addressing matters from farm to dinning table!

So certainly I am excited that the no nonsense tolerating Minister is looking for real solutions and as rightly cited putting into place a high powered committee to look at the big picture and in multi dimensions as it should be.

So rightly – they are also looking at the most suitable supply and distribution mechanism.

And as such - a number of factors needed to be considered for the system to work like uniformity of prices of goods between East and West Malaysia, the types and grades of goods, the role of stakeholders and players in the marketplace.

Issues like the price mechanism for imported rice, local rice, on subsidies, on ordinary flour and enriched flour needs to be examined.

It is a wide challenge - adequate local rice supply must not only reach the urban areas but also rural areas while the price would be controlled.

We must address hoarding, smuggling, panic buying, cross border manipulations and policy.

The best thing that consumers should do is to remain calm and collected and work with the ministry!

BUDGET 2009 – INVITEES RATIONAL FEEDBACKS VITAL FOR HOLISTIC MANAGEMENT!

April 22, 2008 on 10:11 am | In General | Comments Off

BUDGET 2009 – INVITEES RATIONAL FEEDBACKS VITAL FOR HOLISTIC MANAGEMENT!

No, I was not invited to this meeting but it was good to hear that the main thrust and focus of the 2009 Budget will be on efforts to ensure sustainable economic growth and the people’s prosperity in facing the challenges of globalization following rising prices of commodities, including food and oil!

After all this was the thrust of many a grievance and political fallout prior to the 12th General Election.

And indeed Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has earmarked that his administration would continue to be sensitive and committed to overcoming the people’s socio-economic woes and threats to their quality of life, besides ensuring that no group would be marginalized!

That is a good call and worthy to be praised once put into motion and entrenched!

All of must be glad that the government of PM Abdullah is looking ahead to the various challengers and also ensuring sustainable development in the country.

This certainly is reassuring as global and other challengers are causing great upheavals all over and fears of a recession worst than the one in the 70’s!

And I am certain that the implementation of projects under the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP) and in the five economic corridors would bring about rapid and balanced development and economic activity to all sectors of the Malaysian population – be they urban, rural, rich or poor provided they are put into motion with dedication and the long term interest of the nation rather than certain local politicos and others wanting to grease their hands repeatedly in the pudding.

This has happened in the past and must be addressed - as - these abuses are still in the mind of the voters!

I am advised that the budget 2009 Budget with the theme, “Raising Resilience for Sustainable Growth and Prosperity Sharing”, will be tabled in Parliament on Aug 29 this year and look forward to the various feedbacks and reactions from elected representatives, the public and private sectors and certainly the civil society!

At this pre-budget dialogue there were over 151 bodies, including government agencies, non-governmental organizations, financial institutions and the corporate sector and therefore it is pertinent that they give their feedbacks promptly to fine tune its delivery in a manner holistic!

I fully agree with the PM that the private sector is important in helping to steer the economy, adding value to products, enhancing Malaysia’s competitiveness and resilience, and diversifying the economy.

As he stated it is also paramount on us to initiate ways to help those underprivileged and in the low-income group.

We need to look at rising cost, especially of food, fuel, of a plan oaf action to address various consumer dissatisfaction and to tackle issues pertaining to poverty!

We need to address various issues that hinder total integration of Malaysians of all walks of lives and religious faiths!

It is just not enough singing - ‘Malaysia Truly Asia’ without meaning an aiota of it!

We need to look at improving human capital, increase our productivity and competitiveness; our delivery system, people skills and most of all take all measures to protect our environment!

This is easily said than done!

We must remember that there are challengers ahead but certainly we can face them provided we speak with one voice and live in unity – despite our diversity!

UN CHIEF BAN KI-MOON NOW GETS CRACKING ON FOOD SECURITY ISSUES!

April 21, 2008 on 1:34 pm | In General | Comments Off

It is the ‘talking point’ now!

Everyone is an expert on ‘food security’ – even the academicians or ‘others’ who sits in their air conditioned rooms and jet sets to one conference to another on food security and consumer issues without having laid a foot on a paddy field or farm - let alone indulged with those producing our food – the farmers!

But never mind – let the charade continue!

But I am really glad that United Nation’s secretary general, Ban Ki-Moon has now taken time off from the usual issues of ‘war and terror’ to address an issue close to our hearts and our survival in the future – on Food Security!

The UN Chief has rightly warned that the world must urgently increase food production to ease skyrocketing prices!

But while saying that he also made a commitment to set up a ‘task force’ on the crisis which is now threatening to destabilize developing nations.

And the reasons for this urgent move is already out there!

Consumers the world over have realized that the cost of food has increased by around 40 percent since mid-2007 and to make matters worse the tension, fears, the anxieties and deep seeded strain has caused riots and protests in countries like Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Haiti and Egypt!

For example in Haiti food riots this month cost Prime Minister Jacques Edouard Alexis his job and waylaid and setback international efforts to stabilize that country.

It is like a scene from a horror movie or doomsday!

The UN Chief was right when he indicated that that we must make no mistake, the problem is big. If we offer the right aid, the solutions will come!

These were among his many welcomed statements at the five-day U.N. conference on trade and development in Accra Ghana!

It actually brought back memories to me – memories of conference I attended in the 70’s to 80’s where we were repeated told how the world has consumed more than it has produced and more so the US in comparison to the rest of the world!

It is indeed bad and the real causes for the soaring cost of food includes the rising oil prices, the fall of the U.S. dollar and natural disasters!

Now we are told that we must organize US$750 million per year to help feed 73 million people in 80 countries!

So we have our work organized and the only thing left whether there is a real political will among the big and small nations to work together so that we can all survive!

The operative word is working together!

RM4 BILLION ALLOCATION FOR FOOD SECURITY MUST BE MANAGED IN COMPETENCE!

April 21, 2008 on 12:52 pm | In General | Comments Off

I am indeed glad to hear that PM Abdullah (see pix above) has announced that the government was in the midst of formulating a policy to ensure adequate supply of essential food in the near future.

The prime minister was right that we needed a ‘food security policy’ to address the global onslaught on food production, supply and costs!

It was also necessary in my mind to engage the twin effects of soaring global food prices and inflation.

On behalf Malaysian consumers, I want to thank PM Abdullah for allocating RM4 billion for the food security policy but more may be needed!

But we need also intelligent and dedicated players to utilize this allocation to address the need.

It is pertinent that the allocation be not abused, wasted or be a source of many a seepages like ‘old times!’

It is now a matter of survival and the costs and challengers great with no room for foolishness or incompetence!

I am advised by reliable sources at the PM’s office that that the said allocation is primarily to be used to fund food production and stockpiling projects with the first of such project being a large-scale rice-production facility in Sarawak.

This must be monitored at each and every tier!

As such, I am indeed glad that a high-powered committee comprising of government, public and private sector would be established to look into ways to tackle problems arising from inflation which includes those familiar with food and the oil industry.

This is a welcome start and we need to also look at allocating huge land areas for food production and supporting those producing food in the country with all forms of support and among them subsidies, finances, technical and logistics support!

To meet these challengers - all government agencies and the private sector must work hand in hand.

We could also seek the assistance of UN agencies and their expertise in this matter.

I am certain the consumers will also assist all the stakeholders to make this a reality!

Perhaps, some of us can also sit on these committees in the public interest!

SHAME ON YOU CIMB BANK - SHAME ON YOU!

April 21, 2008 on 11:55 am | In General | Comments Off

On the 14th of April 2008, I had gone to CIMB Bank at Jalan Tun Sambanthan, Brickfields to make a withdrawal from the ATM machine to make other payments.

I had placed my sunglasses on top of the ATM as I wore my reading glasses.

After withdrawing I moved over to count the money forgetting the sunglasses on the ATM.

Within seconds, a young man who went to the same ATM machine after withdrawing his money without any hesitation to the overhead CCTV steals my sunglasses and makes a quick getaway!

I make a report at the bank, demanded to see the CCTV at the manager’s room.

Knowing that I am aware of the security protocols - he allows me to see the footage and as I had stated the entire theft was captured on CCTV very clearly indeed!

I asked him for a copy of the footage.

He agreed provided I give him a police report and a covering letter which I did after many hours running to and fro between the bank and the Brickfields police station.

You know the drill and the hustle one has to go through!

The next day, I spoke to the manager’s superior at the CIMB HQ and this ‘fella’ was more interested in protecting the CIMB image rather than me a customer!

Of course – I rammed him with my ‘Queens English’ telling him in no uncertain terms that he was incompetent!

After which he gave me the usual jargon - we value customers and will do all to protect your interest and promised that I can have a clip the next day as I wanted to use it in a press conference to warn other unsuspecting consumers to be careful of thiefs like this fella who stole my expensive sunglasses!

But to date - I have received neither a copy of that footage, a reply to my letter let alone an apology that despite all the ’security measures’ they have in place there - a theft can take place in broad daylight and in the presence of all customers’ and security!

And in this case perhaps, by another CIMB depositor!

It is not the loss of expensive sunglasses of sentimental value but the principle of managing crisis and addressing complaints in a manner that gives depositors confidence not the ‘pussy-footing’, the long wait, the run-a-round, the red tape and bureaucratic tangles and criss cross you put an innocent person through!

Being a consumer advocate I conducted an interview with other customers there and all of them confirmed of the loose and lax security, the ‘presence of characters’ sitting around in the bank watching depositors and other coming in and going out and at times more than a few causing many fear!

More than a week has passed till today I have received no formal reply to my complaint or demand for a thumb drive which I agreed to pay for containing the ‘act of that theft’ – but – no sir till today nothing!

I wonder who really runs CIMB - I hope not Mickey Mouse!

So if you are going to the CIMB Bank’s ATM – and – for that matter any other please be careful!

PM ABDULLAH SHOULD INITIATE DRASTIC CHANGES AND REFORMS IGNORING CALLS FROM IRRELEVANT DISTRACTORS!

April 20, 2008 on 7:40 pm | In General | Comments Off

So what?

Who is Mohd Khir Toyo today?

This arrogant man who initiated the ‘zero opposition policy’ in the state of Selangor has being ‘barking’ but what is needed is instead of spending time reading his irrelevant blog – the Selangor State government should instead initiate a select Royal Commission to investigate ‘his administration’ from day one!

To start with Khir Toyo should take a good look at himself and what he did in Selangor from the onset instead of trying to divert attention and ask PM Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to quit!

The same goes to others trying to resurrect their political careers after either, overstaying their welcome, retirement or rejection by the voters at the GE12th on March 8th

So I am in full agreement with Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz statement that it is foolish of politicians to ask Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to resign.

He was kind by saying they were foolish – I call them political opportunist and idiots who are interested in their own personal interest rather than the nation, interested more to return to the old draconian and corrupt ways than the new open transparent style of sitting PM Abdullah!

They want the old ways – where there was no separation of powers, where dictatorship ruled, where one man can do as he pleases – the days of a sovereign lord and master all taped as one!

The decades where when you ridiculed or challenged them - you would be ‘politically castrated’ like Saudara Anwar Ibrahim was on chargers that has been repeatedly challenged or like others arrested under draconian laws like the obsolete Internal Security Act!

Yes – PM Abdullah has made mistakes but who has not – name me one Malaysian politician who has not!

But there is a difference!

PM Abdullah’s mistake was in ‘omission and not that he intentionally had gone out of his way to lie, cheat and mislead Malaysians like some have done rather repeatedly even when caught ‘red-handed!’

PM Abdullah is in my books a humble and decent man!

Those who are barking for his resignation do not understand what democracy means, more so those who today ‘double speak!’

Especially those who during their political careers had stated that even if they win by one vote they will continue!

So what is wrong with PM Abdullah continuing after all he won 140 seats and short of only a few for a two third majority?

But this is not about democracy is it?

It is about returning to the ‘draconian past to the years of the absolute darkness!’

But the pertinent issue remains: is it right for politicians to press Abdullah to relinquish his posts as prime minister and Umno president?

In my mind and in accordance to Constitutional provisions, that would mean denying the rights of the people who had voted for Barisan Nasional (BN) under PM Abdullah to govern the nation.

Yes Khir Toyo - the Barisan Nasional lost five states because of the arrogance of many BN leaders, parliamentarians, state Menteri Besars and others like you - not just PM Abdullah!

The abuse and corruption was just unbeliverable like the Zakaria Deros Scandal (see pix above) which remains still unexposed!

In fact, the facts and the numbers show clearly in the present setup - BN retained its powers to govern in parliament with 140 seats which entitles the leader of the BN to become the prime minister!

So like Nazri stated quite rightly – by barking like a mad dog in asking Pak Lah to step down, they are actually telling the voters, we are stupid!

So mark those barking, bickering and pointing fingers at all ends except at them and make sure you reject them the next time for abusing your vote after all – GE13th is not far away!

Instead of locking hands and addressing the many challengers the nation faces from internal and global fronts these idiots continuing bickering!

And perhaps, they need to learn a thing or two from Saudara Anwar Ibrahim who has shown political maturity, foresight and leadership despite so much pain and suffering he endured during those ‘dark and evil days’ and where today people expect their leaders to ‘walk the talk’ and initaite ‘change that one can believe in!’

The operative words today are delivering the promises to the voters, initiating long over due reforms and addressing community concerns!

So my call to who ever they are – past ministers, present ministers or who ever, – enough bickering and let us govern making GOD”S righteousness our cornerstone of governance not the old habits of pitting community against community, spearheading racism, fanaticism, continuing the tradition of corruption, abuse of power and all things that are evil!

My call to politicians – ‘behave like statesmen’ and if you cannot then at least ‘shut up’ and retire with the millions of corrupt monies that you have already amassed and accumulated and allegedly in Bahamas, in the Caymans, in Argentina, Labuan, Switzerland, in Hong Kong, Australia especially the ‘Gold Coast’ and the many sites that you own banks or accounts hiding your ill gotten riches after all the chances of that being exposed without a paper trail is just negligible!

SPACE MISSION - A BLATANT LIE OR A NATIONAL PRIDE?

April 20, 2008 on 5:17 pm | In General | Comments Off

Go to fullsize image‘what hypocrisy and at what price!’

I ‘fell down’ laughing after reading about this statement which came after months and months of spins, media high-jacks, ego boosting and an ’ill fated and back fired’ effort to Malaysia’s attempt in searching for another ‘hero’ after the last one failed?

An attempt that caused us millions of good public funds so that a few politicians and their cronies could have their political spins, media stories, certain vernacular magazines and newspaper their ‘hero’ or flavor of the month (?), a much needed distraction from the real things that haunt us daily from the time we wake up till we put ourselves to sleep like the bailouts, the political wheeling and dealing, the corruption, the kickbacks, the abuse of power, the destruction of checks and balances, the separation of powers and wastage of public funds that sees no end till today despite 27 years!

Yes, in all fairness, ’similar nightmares’ started if you remember during the painful ‘Mahathir years’ but we tend to deny this to be ‘politically correct?’

But never mind - so when I was asked to comment on the recent statement of the so called ’national astronaut’ - Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Sheikh Mustapha who had for some ’inexplicable’ reason proposed that the government postpone Malaysia’s second space mission I could not but really pause!

He said the postponement was to allow the community to be fully exposed to the programme before the second mission could take-off.

For some strange reason, he seem to ‘see the light’ or is it plain hypocrisy on his part, to state now that we need to learn a lot of things about aerospace and the community must have a good understanding of the programme – statements coming after we had spent hundreds of millions of public funds!

Is he aware that this frolic caused ratepayers hundreds of millions that in my judgment could have been diverted to more useful schemes like clinics, schools, hospitals, training more doctors and para-medical staff for specialization and super specialization and continuing education for our resource people in education and further education!

And the fact that he had stated this in front of ‘budding students’ and ‘young minds!

To be exact - according to reports - we are told about 2000 Mara junior college students from Kubang Pasu and Beseri in Perlis were there to hear him!

Who prior to this ‘confession’ may have had many a impression on this vary program and this individual – thanks to the multi level spins in the media!

Now these students will also know it was ‘a high powered lie – all lies’ – at the expense of the people – a project that was initiated for an agenda that had nothing to do first and foremost, with research, technology and aerospace!

Just a scheme – another project by some well connected mastermind to make hundreds of millions at the expense of the Malaysian people!

WE MUST DECLARE WAR ON DENGUE SAYS JG!

April 19, 2008 on 12:15 am | In General | Comments Off

Go to fullsize image

The Consumers Association of Subang and Shah Alam Selangor’s (CASSA) deputy secretary general’s son barely 3 years of age is in a private hospital suspected to be suffering from dengue!

Several years ago, we lost a good friend, a very dedicated caring, sincere and talented eye specialist, an associate professor, who gave her life’s work and mastery of the skills to all post graduate students at Universiti Hospital!

She was also a caring and dedicated doctor!

Yes indeed - I am refering to Prof Dr Malikka, who was a very close friend of my wife, Dr Sharmila Ramachandran and Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (see pix above) when they worked together at Universiti Hospital in the 90’s!

Everyone who I met had nothing but good and decent things to say about her and it is a very great loss that she was a victim of dengue in Subang Jaya of all places!

So are we doing enough to addess this menace to public interest and health?

I find it rather strange that despite all the facts on this menace we are not doing enough to combat this on a national level!

And we should not get excited with Health Ministry’s Disease Control Director Dr Hasan Abdul Rahman’s statement that only a total of 741 cases of dengue fever was reported nationwide for the week, a drop of merely two per cent or 15 cases from the 756 cases reported in the previous week!

What rubbish statement is this?

As far as I am concerned the number cited is still high!

In fact, I am advised by reliable sources that over 10 states  recorded an increase in dengue cases for the past week!

They were as follows:

1. Terengganu (175 per cent)

2. Selangor (113.1 per cent)

3. Labuan (100 per cent)

4. Perak (67.3 per cent)

5. Sabah (46.7 per cent)

6. Kedah (45.5 per cent)

7. Johor (24.3 per cent)

8. Penang (19 per cent)

9. Negeri Sembilan (12.5 per cent) and

10.Kuala Lumpur (7.7 per cent).

As you can see my home state Selangor is proudly at second place!

It is time we pool our resources and address this matter!

Go to fullsize imageBoth the federal and state agencies must come together with a ‘plan of action’ that involves the local councils and the various health departments as well!

We must move first to all construction areas and take punitive action on contracters if the site under their care and control breeds dengue!

Go to fullsize imageWe must initiate regular checks at all housing estates, pools, abandoned buildings, schools and all public areas.

We must engage the electronic and print media to conduct media blitz on this matter so that members of the public are updated and made aware of their responsibility in combating this menace!

This is our joint responsibility!

Below is an article I wrote several years ago - it seems nothing has changed!

Local Authorities Fail in Fighting Dengue (Posted on 12.39pm Jan 04, 2003 )

I am saddened that several people in my neighborhood have contracted dengue.

It does not end there. For the record, we have also had fatalities and noted among them is a Subang Jaya resident, also a former Universiti Hospital Eye Specialist and Associate Professor, who has served with dedication and distinction. She is a shining beacon and friend to both her colleagues, and post and undergraduate medical students!

And for this reason alone, I cannot but be angry and upset that the information that dengue fever has claimed 54 lives in 2002, with 10,753 confirmed cases reported nationwide was kept from the public.

And to add salt to wound, neither was there a concentrated effort in mobilizing a nationwide effort to combat this outbreak nor take punitive sanctions against those who aid and abet this situation to exist, be they individuals, developers or the local councils!

Despite all the “hype, propaganda and publicity on how e-savvy Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) is, the township has the distinction of been singled out as the “dengue capital of the nation”!

And noted among them are the “high demand residential areas in USJ!”

Perhaps, those who have received their “political appointment” as MPSJ councilors with the various perks should tender their resignation for failing miserably to monitor, act and protect the rights and interests of residents here!

And the heads of the MPSJ health enforcement units should be immediately replaced!

It is a pity that a township which was planned as an “environmental haven” four decades ago has turned into a “nightmare concrete jungle”, thanks to incompetent enforcement, questionable and arbitrarily construction approvals and with construction and developers running amok.

INSENSITIVE

Today, Subang Jaya can be best remembered for the symbiotic relationships between certain developers enjoying a monopoly in construction approvals and “people in the corridors of power” despite failing to surrender titles meant for parks, public areas and usage and for an obsession for “Manhattan styled skyline”, excessive signboards, abandoned projects, traffic jams, flash flood, contaminated water and a quality of life that is suspect!

And these very authorities instead of mobilizing a massive campaign to contain the outbreak are rather insensitive by telling us to be calm and that we are “currently experiencing an increase in the number of cases compared to 2001, but it has not reached the epidemic stage!

As a consumer advocate, may I ask both the Ministry of Housing and Local Government and Ministry of Health, how many “body bags” must we fill before it is to be classified “an epidemic” and worthy of a national alert and effort?

For the record, in 2001 alone, Malaysia posted 50 deaths and reported 8,669 dengue cases.

I am also aware that the World Health Organization (WHO) had issued an alert about five months ago warning all countries in the tropical region, including Malaysia, to be prepared for an increase in the number of dengue cases in view of present weather conditions. It is a pity that our local authorities have not adequately responded to the alert!

Ironically, the problem is not in some rural unreachable corner of Malaysia but in several areas who boost of their “bandaraya status” !

Time here is of the essence and it is of utmost importance that both the Ministry of Housing and Local Government and the Ministry of Health put away their “petty squabbles and ministerial tussles” and address the outbreak.

It is also important that the Ministry of Information instead of spending too much time on “political propaganda” go on an offensive media blitz, utilizing the private television stations too, to conscientize the masses on the dengue problem.

UNFAIRLY SACKED JUDGES - AN APOLOGY WOULD HAVE BEEN IN ORDER!

April 18, 2008 on 1:02 pm | In General | Comments Off

‘justice must be done no matter how late!’

Those were traumatic years when one man went all out to destroy every ‘check and balance’ the country had pre/post independence to further consolidate his power and reign!
Certainly, some sons and daughters may have forgotten it!
Many ass lickers from that administration and others in power in the civil service may have forgotten it – perhaps, the reason why this man is ‘still untouchable?’

Perhaps, certain bloggers for reasons of ‘their own’ seem to forget it – perhaps, in their dislike and hatred for the alleged ‘wrongs’ done to them in their previous employment by a perceived ‘crony’ of the present administration?

But you cannot simply pretend that those 22 years were simply bliss when cronyism and nepotism ran wild, years when politicians sons and daughters were treated like ‘semi-gods’ by the corporate and business world, some sitting as directors  in hundreds of companies?

When some ‘takeovers and privatization’ (or should I say pirate – tization) took place at least in one case – one son made RM10 Million (as undertable money?) according to statements contained in ‘court documents in an ongoing trial’ that if used as an example could shed huge light how privatization took place in Malaysia!

Today they all speak differently – they are bloggers, they write columns taking the high moral ground and worst still the rogue behind those sad years refuses to apologize blaming all others than his miserable self!

I remember those frightening years – of – operation lallang, the shutting down of newspapers, the arbitrarily and draconian arrest of a wide cross section of politicians, religious leaders, environmentalist. trade unionist, consumer advocates under the Internal Security Act!
But the worst case – was the abuse of power shown when a special tribunal was convened to try Salleh Abbas (see pix) on charges of misconduct and for questioning constitutional amendments that seriously eroded the powers of the judiciary!

It was a well prepared charade – script!

As expected - Salleh was subsequently sacked.

He was not alone as Supreme Court judges Seah and Wan Sulaiman - who had ruled that the tribunal was convened unconstitutionally – shared the same fate after being found guilty of misconduct by another tribunal.

The irony is three others decent judges - Azmi, Eusoffe and Wan Hamzah were also suspended!

The rest is history as the ‘black hand’ and his ‘machais’ behind this despicable act went on to rule the nation with an iron fist until he was given a political whack and set back by former DPM Anwar Ibrahim in the events that unfolded in the late 90’s!
But the truth is that ‘black hands wrongs and follies’ are today laid bare by a more open administration of Abdullah Ahmad Badawi (see pix) in which the ‘Lingam tapes’ were the first installment!

But whatever said and done - the result of that despicable years is till today - endured!

So certainly, as a consumer advocate of over 35 years track record in political, consumer and public policy I am elated that a Judicial Appointments Commission will be set up to help the Prime Minister choose judges!

It will certainly renew the people’s trust in the judiciary.

It will make the entire process - of nominating, appointing and promoting judges more transparent and representative.

But all in all – I am sad that PM Abdullah did not take this opportunity to convey an apology to those who suffered in the 1988 political adventure!

It would have really turned the course much faster and fast tracked the recovery and reconciliation process!

However – in all fairness - the announcement by PM Abdullah that a goodwill ex-gratia payment to the six outstanding judges as recognition of their contributions and that there will be a review of the judiciary’s terms of service and remuneration to ensure that the Bench can attract and retain the very best of the nation’s talent is most welcomed!

Though in my humble analysis – too little too late – it is a good start!

MORE HYPERMARKETS IN SELANGOR - NO THANKS!

April 18, 2008 on 11:29 am | In General | Comments Off

I have said this before - and - I am saying it again - there should be ‘no discussion’ here as there are enough hypermarkets in Selangor and we do not need more!

The present hypermarkets are already threatening the rights and interest of small scale shop keepers, retailers and other outlets and changing radically the business environment!

We do not want to worsen the economic situation of ’small scale retailers/outlets by allowing this large business chains to operate at the expense of the ‘little people!’

Of late, I have already heard allegations from various sources that there are chains presuring and manipulating importers, suppliers and others holding monopolies to use the former for all their business outlets and needs and this is clearly an attempt to totally remove the small scale retailers from the business chain and environment!

The economics of scale and price difference is just too much for them to survive!

We will not allow this and we now go on record telling the policymakers - that under no circumstances must we allow any more hypermarkets to come out - ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

Let us protect our small scale retailers and shop keepers - our ‘kedai runcits’ and so forth!

FOOD SECURITY IN PLAIN ENGLISH PLEASE!

April 18, 2008 on 11:00 am | In General | Comments Off

Yes, no doubt it was a response - a much awaited response after an earlier ‘press conference’ was called off as I was advised by reliable sources!

And when it came - I felt cheated because it was a classic statement tailor made by senior civil servants and spin masters who may not have spent a day on the ground!

But never mind - I will give the ‘benefit of doubt’ to the policymakers here for the time being while we continue conducting our comprehensive research on the issue not in air conditioned rooms but on the ‘hot sweaty and many times flooded ground’ - ala ‘turun padang style’.

So indeed the ministry says that prompted by the price increase of rice in the international market it is formulating a special strategy to ensure sufficient food supply in the country.

Can we know what this ’special strategy’ is all about now or is it to be a big secret - a ‘James Bond type for your eyes only’ Official Secrets Act tailor made ‘bullshit?

Why not put it in plain English?

With detailed plan of action as we are all taught in elementary school?

But no doubt they claim that this ’special strategy’ implementation will ensure sufficient rice supply, but also other food.

Really? Brillant!

We shall monitor!

However, I was a bit disappointed with the so called ’strategy’ as I have heard all that before from the various United Nations organized Food Security Conferences to the press spins of respective governments.

Will the so called ’plan’ - enhancing agriculture infrastructure, increasing crop yield, providing and improving the irrigation system and to develop idle land for padi farming as well as for other crops bear fruit?

Perhaps, it will - but then gain have we already identified all the above mentioned factors on the ground or is it just a jargon for the press to say that the said ministry is working?

I would advice the ministry to really ‘walk the talk’ - failing which there will be a backlash from the ‘raayat!’

So start with taking back large portions of good agricultural land earmarked for construction - and - make the appropriate finances/micro-credit available with subsidies for our farmers to proactively engage this issue with the policymakers and consumer advocates!

PLASTIC BOTTLE CHEMICAL, CHILDREN’S BOTTLES AND THE CANCER LINK?

April 17, 2008 on 1:18 am | In General | Comments Off

‘better to be safe than sorry’ - more research and immediate ban the answer!’

We are indeed troubled to hear that chemical in some plastic food and drink packaging including baby bottles may be tied to early puberty and prostate and breast cancer!

The report from the U.S. government is indeed causing alarm in the already upset global village!

Our counterparts in the US tell us that based on draft findings by the National Toxicology Program, part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, senior congressional Democrats have asked the Food and Drug Administration to reconsider its view that the chemical bisphenol A is safe in products for use by infants and children.

Sources inform us that the said chemical called BPA, is used in many baby bottles and the plastic lining of cans of infant formula.

In this case the National Toxicology Program went further than previous U.S. government statements on possible health risks from BPA.

The report is supposed to have stated that there was some concern for neural and behavioral effects in fetuses, infants and children at current human exposures!

The findings also expressed concern about exposure in these populations based on ‘effects in the prostate gland, mammary gland, and an earlier age for puberty in females.’

Reports indicate that the National Toxicology Program had stated that laboratory rodents exposed to BPA levels similar to human exposures developed precancerous lesions in the prostate and mammary glands, among other things.

They also ‘felt’ that exposure of pregnant women to BPA causes fetal or neonatal death, birth defects or reduced birth weight and growth

So without playing with words or semitics, we must say that our concerns like others across the global village is that the possibility that bisphenol A may impact human development cannot be dismissed and precaution and further research is the answer!

For the record - bisphenol A is used in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins and can be found in food and drink packaging as well as compact discs and some medical devices.

In fact, several years ago I already raised the alarm bells on plastic water bottles after reliable sources in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China warned us of the cancer link there too!

NOT SUSPENSION ALONE BUT A JAIL TERM THE SOLUTION TO STOP THE ROAD CARNAGE INVOLVING PUBLIC TRANSPORT SAYS JG!

April 17, 2008 on 12:49 am | In General | Comments Off

‘the road carnage must be addressed and put to an end’ - Dr Jacob George.

NOT SUSPENSION ALONE BUT A JAIL TERM THE SOLUTION TO STOP THE ROAD CARNAGE INVOLVING PUBLIC TRANSPORT SAYS JG!

Well as a starter – the said recommendation for a one-month suspension of all the 232 permits of an express bus company because its buses were involved in accidents that resulted in deaths and injury every month since December last year is a good start but not enough!

The ministry is to see if manslaughter or negligence chargers could be brought up to address the public interest issue in this matter as well.

But in all fairness, I welcome dear friend, Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development Minister Noh Omar’s (see pix left) statement that a committee of the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board (CVLB) conducting investigations into bus accidents would make the recommendation to the CVLB which would meet soon.

We are advised that the committee had investigated four road accidents involving the company’s buses which resulted in six deaths and 19 injured as well as the management of the fleet of buses and the level of occupational safety and health of the company’s workers before coming up with the recommendation.

So far the said company’s buses were involved in accidents in which 19 people were badly injured in a road accident at the Sungkai toll plaza on Dec 18 last year, three people were killed in an accident at Km383.7 of the North-South Expressway near Behrang on Jan 25, two people were killed at Km396.7 of the North-South Expressway on Feb 2 and one person was killed at the Seremban toll plaza on April 8.

Actually to me – this statistics is enough to initiate both manslaughter and negligence chargers for starters!

I sincerely think this is certainly not the time for a ‘slap on the wrist’ or some pussyfooting response as lives has been lost!

I am aware that in many other jurisdictions abroad – nothing short of jail terms and immediate withdrawal of operating license take effect!

Here – once again we tend to be rather slow to show who is in charge!

As long as this is done – the carnage will continue!

So I will have my ‘teh tarik’ session with dear friend, Noh Omar sooner than expected, in view of these unfortunate episodes!

JG PLEADS FOR LEADERS WITH WISDOM TO STEER THE NATION FORWARD!

April 16, 2008 on 9:42 pm | In General | Comments Off

‘Pak Lah & Najib - must work together without distraction to steer the nation forward!’

It is often said that wisdom is the key to success!

Many biblical prophets had it, many local and international statesmen had it but the sadness is these days we have leaders and aspiring leaders having none of it!

And why do I say this?

After more than a month after the landmark Malaysian elections of March 6/2008– we still have individuals, defeated candidates, political parties and their leadership continuing a mantra of bickering, pointing fingers, accusing all and sundry, organizing protests and demonstrations which we can do without and worst still launching ultimatums and challengers to party leadership!

To make matters worse those entrusted to run their professions professionally are also in a quandary when they are seen still beholden to the political powers that be rather than to professional dictum!

It is simply sad – a circus that continues to this day – with very few individuals speaking out against this continued charade of plain stupidity as if lessons have not been learnt and that lost power come be reconsolidated by sheer brute strength!

Worst still no one is saying sorry either for past betrayal of trusts, political arrogance and omissions!

I wonder while political ass lickers (see pix left!)are doing a superb job doing what they are best at - have they ever thought whether they love our beloved country Malaysia more than those who dished out contracts, price positions in GLCs and the many forms of political goodies that is dished out to them, their family and relatives through some misplaced and vulgar notion of nationalism?

Are these idiots aware that while we engage in such despicable acts the case gets stronger for our country’s growth and economy to decline in the second-half of the year due to a downturn in the US economy!

Are we consolidating all our energy to address this challenge or have we lost our focus?

I have no doubt that we may sustain our first half growth but the crunch comes in the second and all of us should get off our hobby horse of stupidity and address how we can assist the country rather than create chaos for her!

As I indicated in my earlier post – the United States of American our lead trading partner is already in a recession!

And therefore, the nation’s conditions may deteriorate in the second-half of 2008 as we get hit in more ways than one!

I have already stated that consumers are already pressured with food prices and oil continuing to rise and world conditions are not helping!

So my plea to all and sundry in the Malaysian environment is – let us place party politics in the back seat for now and instead gather our strengths to steer our nations to greater productivity and growth in an atmospheres of peace, tolerance and love!

This needs wisdom – perhaps, our Biblical Solomon’s Wisdom!
