GAME OVER?

With all the day’s happening one thing kept coming up by ‘all and sundry’ - what now happens in the UMNO Youth elections?

Will it be ‘game over’ for some while ‘new faces’ and ‘teams’ emerge as they always do in others?

KEEPING THEM HONEST - I SAID IT ON SEPT 23 AND I SAY IT AGAIN TODAY!

September 26, 2008 on 3:44 pm | In General | Comments Off

I did say the following on September 23 2008!

‘It is paramount that Umno deputy president, Najib Tun Razak and senior vice president, Muhyiddin Yassin take control of Umno as acting president and acting deputy president this coming week without fail or delay prior to the Dec general assembly.

This will create a ‘chain reaction’ of stability and when Parliament reconvenes, and for that matter, at the Umno general assembly, whoever wants to challenge the ‘status quo’ can do so.

I am certain the ‘status quo’ will survive.

Buumno selangor najib muhyiddin event anti pak lah banners 160408 08t for the ‘status quo’ to survive and most importantly survive the next general election, Najib and Muhyiddin must make more than just cosmetic changes.

They need to work immediately in setting up a high powered select committee to initiate a comprehensive look at all the issues that need immediate handling, especially issues pertaining to race relations, polarisation and racist bigotry and plan regular audits and post mortems.

They need to repeal draconian legislation like the Internal Security Act 1960, the Official Secrets Act 1985 and similar other acts.

We need to close down the Kamunting detention centre and release all the ISA detainees or charge them in an open court with the legislation that we already have.

Najib and Muhyiddin should warn all Umno members that it is not ‘business as usual’ and that they will see real changes, most importantly, the new leadership’s zero tolerance to racist statements.

This will show that the new administration is serious in tackling racial bigotry both in the party and the country.

A second team can be initiated to draw up a ‘plan of action’ to lure in foreign investments and look into fundamental changes in the way we have been doing business and make radical changes so that we will draw in huge FDIs and the country become more competitive as we face insurmountable challenges from our neighbours in the region.

A third group can initiate all forms of action that will address the various ‘abuses of power and corruption’ in the nation and in particular the civil service.

The agenda here is zero tolerance for corruption and abuse of power.

We must return to the ‘good old days’ where the Federal Constitution was supreme and honoured, there was separation of powers between the organs of state and government, the judiciary was independent and the civil service was professional and impartial, before  ‘Mahathirism’ ruined it all.

Unless these become the immediate framework of change – a change that we can believe in – we will not be able to stop a new political reality in Malaysia.’

And in todays UMNO supreme council meeting it looks like my script is ‘on target!’

KEEPING THEM HONEST - ENOUGH JUST BAN ALL CHINA PRODUCTS!

September 23, 2008 on 6:54 pm | In General | Comments Off

IT IS EASY – JUST BOYCOTT ALL CHINA PRODUCTS!

Well the Malaysian government has widened its ban on Chinese dairy products to include candies, chocolates and all foods containing milk!

Is it a case of doing a comprehensive ‘mop-up’ or just another ‘knee jerk reaction’ one that I call ‘too little too late!’

I do not wish to comment about the statement that the Health Ministry’s food safety and quality division are now being deployed nationwide to enforce the ban on foods from China!

It may be a reaction to the mess but I have always spoken of having a data bank of all importers, their points of entry, their warehouses, their distribution and marketing arms, their distributive network nationwide and most important the contact numbers so that any government agency can initiate a ‘product recall mechanism!’

No sir it has not happened and will not happen because we still subscribe to the ‘close one eye policy?’

This is not the first for China and I will say it would not be the last!

What we do now is keeping it simple – BAN ALL CHINA PRODUCTS!

Why – our neighbor Singapore has found the potentially deadly chemical melamine in the popular White Rabbit Creamy Candy from China!

If you remember - Melamine is at the centre of a widening food safety scandal in China!

The chemical has sometimes been added into food products to boost the apparent protein content.

The protein levels of food products are done by measuring the nitrogen content, and adding nitrogen-rich compounds such as melamine can mislead the tests.

More reason than that is that about 53,000 Chinese infants have become sick after drinking formula laced with melamine, a chemical used in plastics which can also make milk appear to be full of protein.

Four children in China have died.

And if that is not bad enough - Melamine can cause kidney stones and lead to kidney failure as well!

KEEPING THEM HONEST - NAJIB AND MUHYIDDIN MUST TAKE CONTROL IMMEDIATELY!

September 20, 2008 on 6:49 pm | In General | Comments Off

The stage is set!

It is paramount that deputy premier, Najib Tun Razak and Muhyiddin Yassin take control of UMNO as acting president and acting deputy president this coming week without fail nor delay!

This will create a ‘chain reaction’ of stability and when Parliament reconvenes, whosoever wants to challenge the ‘status quo’ could do so!

I am certain the ‘status quo’ will survive!

They need to work immediately in setting up a high powered select committee to initiate a comprehensive look at all the issues that need immediate handling, especially issues pertaining to race relations, polarization and racist bigotry and along set time lines with regular audits and post mortems!

They need to repeal draconian legislation like the Internal Security Act 1960, the Official Secrets Act 1985 and similar others from the ‘map and face’ of Malaysian statutes!

We need to close down ‘Kamunting’ and release all the ISA detainees or charge them in open court with the legislation that we already have!

Najib and Muhyiddin should warn all UMNO members that it is not ‘business as usual’ and the changes that is being ‘put to form’ most importantly the new leaderships zero tolerance to racist statements and that immediate action of being expelled from the party becomes the hallmark to those who continue with no right to appeal!

This to show commitment and a political will of zero tolerance!

A second team can be initiated to look at drawing up a ‘plan of action’ to lure in foreign investments and looking into fundamental changes in the way we have been doing business and making radical changes so that we will draw in huge FDIs and the country will become more competitive as we face insurmountable challengers from our neighbors in the region to attract the same!

EGM on ISA: To realise that which is in our collective ability to achieve and accomplish PDF Print E-mail
Contributed by Andrew Khoo Chin Hock
Friday, 19 September 2008 10:26am

Andrew KhooTo my brothers and sisters at the Bar,

Roman Catholic priests do it, Cabinet Ministers do it, MPs from both sides of the aisle do it, the Mufti of Perlis does it, even the former Prime Minister of Malaysia does it. So let’s all do it. Do what? No, not fall in love (though they may all do that too). No, let’s oppose the existence of the ISA.

I know, I know, you will say, it’s yet another Malaysian Bar EGM on the ISA. So what else is new? What is so different about this time that we should give up a very nice Saturday to attend? And it’s not that there will be breakfast – the notice says only water will be provided.

Well I could tempt you with the promise of a new Malaysian Bar anti-ISA badge. (I myself haven’t seen it but I’ve seen the mock-up). Or new anti-ISA t-shirts that will be sold by volunteers from Gerakan Mansuhkan ISA (GMI). But I won’t.

I would have liked to attend. But for a pre-arranged trip to Myanmar, I would be there. So for all those of you who are in the country and are able to attend, please do. Please come, and speak out. Come to stand up and be counted. If nothing else, it is to say, yes once again, that we are against the ISA. That the ISA represents such a departure from even the minimum standards of decency to our fellow human beings and citizens which any self-respecting society should aspire.

But it is for so many more reasons. At the last count, 67 of them. Some are husbands and fathers and brothers, all but one of them sons. Separated from their families, loved ones and friends, their lives torn apart, unable to test the veracity of and respond to the very serious allegations made against them which have deprived them of their liberty because they have been unconscionably denied their fundamental right to a fair and open trial. And incarcerated indefinitely with no knowledge, let alone certainty, of release. The longest detainee is now in his 6th year and 9th month of detention, and will remain locked away until at least January 2010.

Another reason? Because the use of the ISA in this manner, and under these circumstances, is clearly no longer simply about whether or not the ISA is an immoral piece of legislation (which it is). Instead it is about the attempt by the executive branch of government to justify the ill-thought through use of the ISA for purely self-serving (and self-surviving) partisan political reasons. And if doubt can be (and it certainly has been) cast about the true nature of the motives on the part of the executive in using the ISA this time, then it seriously calls into question the true nature of the motives on the part of the same executive in using the ISA all those times before.

Yet another reason? At this juncture of our history and our country’s political development, separate segments of society have been brought together and united in opposition to a cruel and inhumane piece of legislation. I may have started humorously. But the truth of the matter is that leaders from all sides of the political divide, leaders representing the major religions in this country, leaders of civil society organisations, and the average person in the street, have all voiced their disapproval of the ISA. Its patent unfairness and injustice have been so vividly brought home into the living rooms of millions of households up and down our country. In a way that has never occurred before, ordinary people have sensed for themselves the evil violation of their civic rights and have responded to their civil responsibilities. Their righteous indignation has rightfully drawn them out into the streets, in silent candlelit protest against the abusive nature of the powers that be. The sound of their silence has been deafening. That the authorities feel threatened could be sensed in the order of a police officer to those attending the Bukit Aman vigil not only to disperse but to snuff out their candles. For the light of their candles shines brightly to expose the dark moral bankruptcy of those who would cling to and protect and defend a decadent remnant of colonial rule in order to continue to subjugate a people struggling for meaningful freedom. But our protests will not be snuffed out.

Of course the Bar has spoken. Our President has issued a statement on our behalf. Our brothers and sisters at law continue the busy task of representing the detainees in the courts and review boards of our land, but to little or no avail. Even though we may not agree with their politics, in detaining one the executive detains us all. The detention of one diminishes us all. As the poet John Donne once wrote:

“No man is an Island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the Continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friends or of thine own were; any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankind; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

So we can and should do more. When we came face to face with injustice last year, we bravely took to the streets. In the face of continuing injustice, we can, indeed society expects us to, do no less than to come forward and let our collective voice be heard through the overwhelming and unanimous endorsement of the resolution placed before the EGM.

I therefore urge as many of you as possible to attend. To show support and solidarity with those whose liberty has been snatched away, often in the darkness of the night. To speak out for those whose voices have been silenced. To stand up for those who are unable to do so for themselves. In the words of Friedrich Gustav Martin Niemoller:

“In Germany they came first for the Communists, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn’t speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up.”

May we always strive and never cease to rise above ourselves, in spite of ourselves, to realise that which is in our collective ability to achieve and accomplish.

PAK LAH, REPEAL THE ISA.

Prime Minister, at your press conference yesterday you were reported to have said, among other things, that Anwar Ibrahim “has become a threat to the economy and possibly security” meaning national security.

When asked by journalists what action the government would take against Anwar, you were reported to have said “I will not indicate what plan I will take, what I do will be in the best interests of the people and the country”.

These remarks have caused considerable speculation that the repressive draconian Internal Security Act 1960 may be invoked to arrest and detain Anwar particularly in the current environment where there is a prevailing climate of fear after the arrest and detention of a prominent blogger, member of parliament and a young journalist, though the journalist has since been released.

With respect, let me remind you that detention under the ISA is meant to deter a substantial body of persons to cause fear by engaging in organised violence to procure the alteration of the government lawfully established. This is clearly expressed in the preamble to the ISA.

In this regard, the assurance given by Tun Abdul Razak, the then deputy prime minister and minister of defence, to the Dewan Rakyat when he moved the second reading of the Internal Security Bill on June 21, 1960 on the two aims of this legislation must be borne in mind. He said, among other things:

“The honourable prime minister and other members of the government, including myself, have made it quite clear on a number of occasions that, because the emergency is to be declared at an end, the government does not intend to relax its vigilance against the evil enemy who still remains as a threat on our border and who is now attempting by subversion to succeed where he has failed by force of arms. It is for this reason that this bill is before the House. It has two main aims; firstly to counter subversion throughout the country and, secondly, to enable the necessary measures to be taken on the border area to counter terrorism”.

Tun Razak further assured ,“The government has no desire whatsoever to hinder healthy democratic opposition in any way.  This is a democratic country and the government intends to maintain it as such. It is the enemies of democracy who will be detained”, adding, “Nor will these powers be abused”.

In the absence of any evidence of any organised violence to remove your government, any measure taken to detain Anwar or any more members of the opposition parties under this draconian legislation, particularly in the current environment, will be seen as your government not only abusing the power of detention under the ISA but also using the ISA meant in essence for the protection of the security of the state being used for the protection of the security of the political party currently in government. Such perceptions will not go down well with right thinking Malaysians and the international community.

Please do not resort to this legislation to detain Anwar or anyone else. As part of your programme for reform, please repeal this repressive and draconian legislation which has long outlived its purpose and aims.

As expected, at least by me, Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni has won the leadership of the governing Kadima party, putting her on track to succeed Ehud Olmert as prime minister!
If I am not mistaken the last time Israel had a woman Prime Minister was during the leadership of Mrs Golda Meir! (see pix left)

In these elections, Ms Livni beat Transport Minister Shaul Mofaz by just 431 votes, or 1.1%.

Ms Livni in her victory speech has announced that she wanted to form a new cabinet “as quickly as possible in the face of the serious threats” facing Israel.

She has 42 days to do so, during which time Mr Olmert remains prime minister.

So far emerging reactions to Ms Livni’s victory is positive and among them was the reaction of senior Palestinian Authority negotiator, Brother Saeb Erekat, who hoped the result would lead to a return to stability.

According to my contacts in Washington and London, Ms Livni would be good for Israel as she is seen to be less hawkish, a Ms Clean and truly focused to reactivating the often stalled peace talks between Israel and our Palestinian brothers and sisters!

I am told that she has excellent foreign relations credentials, which is vital in managing issues ahead.

It will also help to formulate a permanent solution in West Asia for the Palestinians – one that will be a lasting peace, a permanent homeland free from anxiety and tensions, giving them back their humanity and dignity!

KEEPING THEM HONEST - THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STATESMEN AND SELF SERVING POLITICIANS!

September 18, 2008 on 3:05 pm | In General | Comments Off

This is not the time for a ‘John Wayne’ style of behavior or attack! This is certainly not the time for more ISA arrest and threats!

This is not the time for more political battles, bickering, racist bigoty, and the show and abuse of power to bring fear and intimidation right to our bedrooms, this is the time for reconciliation, this is the time for prayer, humility, peace and goodwill, more so because this is the holy and sacred month of Ramadan!

Our country’s stock exchange is crashing and the mood in the country is one of sadness, shame and anger!

But the ‘blame game’ continues!

Instead of addressing the issues, many are pointing fingers at their political adversaries as if the country is in the ‘mess it is in’ because of one single individual!

Common sense, political discerment and wisdom will tell us that the last thing we need is for the international community to initiate trade sanctions and other embargoes on us for any further actions that may be interpreted as a serious violation of Human Rights and other United Nations Conventions and charters to which Malaysia is a signatory!

This is not domestic politics any longer and I appeal to all the above three to meet and discuss ‘a plan of action’ that serves the nation first and its call for a change that we can all believe in!

It is no more who wants to continue as Prime Minister or who hopes he will succeed as Prime Minister, let alone who feels he must be Prime Minister at any costs!

If the ’disgusting and pariah’ Robert Mugabe (see pix left) can finally allow a discourse for change and a unity government in Zimbabwe - can the above three not be all statesmen and do the same for our beloved nation Malaysia?

We do not need the ISA, we need desperately a ’politics of reconciliation?’

KEEPING THEM HONEST - SHOULD PAKATAN NOW NOT BE PLAYING A ROLE AS A CONSTRUCTIVE OPPOSITION?

So as expected – September 16 came and went!

In pakatan rakyat 916 gathering kelana jaya 150908 anwar.jpgall fairness – is it not time to put this episode of wanting to overthrow the present government aside and for those in the Malaysian opposition and others as independents to concentrate on governing the five states which it currently controls!

They should use the 5 states as an example to show accountable governance, saying no to racism, racist bigotry, corruption, abuse of power and all that they accuse others of!

By this they can show Malaysian voters an example of effective and accountable governance!

At Parliament they should play the role of a loyal opposition through the formation of a shadow cabinet like they have in Britain!

By all these at state level and in Parliament they will be showing voters that they are indeed a coalition that will work together in the nation’s interest and not individual leaders obsessions and ‘mind games’ – and that they truly compliment each other free from the kind of racist bigotry that we are so used to and the result of all these is simply – that they will increase the voter’s confidence that they indeed are a  ‘government-in-waiting’ rather than a temporary opposition alliance of convenience led by an individual obsessed of becoming Malaysian Prime Minister!

KEEPING THEM HONEST - WHO WILL LEAD MALAYSIA OUT OF THIS MESS?

September 16, 2008 on 11:50 am | In General | Comments Off

In my estimate there were easily over 30,000 people all coming to hear of an impakatan rakyat 916 gathering kelana jaya 150908 stage.jpgpending change!

Anwar did not disappoint them either.

At the said rally he set out an agenda to fight corruption and protect the rights of all citizens in Malaysia.

He also emphasized that the Pakatan Rakyat government will uphold justice, a free judiciary, a free media and a professional police force all what the people were clamoring for!

If only certain warlords and politicians had read the emotions and desires of the people rather sooner rather than thinking that the ‘old tactics’ will work once again and that you can continue to lead by fear!

Today is September 16 2008 – and many things are happening today according to my sources!

Some are still in ‘slumber land’ thinking this is all a bluff and the MSM is no better spinning stories accordingly with a news medium that claims to be Malaysia’ news voice even not carrying the resignation of a minister! That is how pathetic things have become!

So who is bluffing?

I am advised there are many things happening today - Will the highlights be the release of all Internal Security Act detainees with Kamunting, Taiping, Perak closing down and being made a place of tourist interest?

‘Pak Sheikh’ Anwar Ibrahim is having a press conference; several component political parties are having their ‘high powered meetings’, Ku Li, Zaid Ibrahim and several others too having a meet the press session!

Even the ‘mad cow of Penang’ is having a press conference!

I do not know if the ‘mad cow of Selangor’ is planning one for himself too?

But the question I raise is who really loves Malaysia to want the best for her and for the multi racial multi religious peace loving and God fearing people who only want a country to be progressive, to move forward, to be always peaceful and economically sound free from corruption, abuse of power, abuse of the provisions of the Federal Constitution, cronyism, nepotism, racism and all things that separate us from being a family of Malaysians – enough to give way that this dream comes true!

And who will it be that leader who will free us from all forms of shackles and fetters and take Malaysia forward?

KEEPING THEM HONEST - EVEN IN ZIMBABWE THERE IS TODAY A UNITY GOVERNMENT!

September 15, 2008 on 7:29 pm | In General | Comments Off

I had written extensively on the ‘brutal Mugabe regime’ and it would be meaningless if I do not today ‘sigh a relief’ to note that, even here there is today a unity government that promises a fresh start and towards a change that all can believe in!

Not one in the ‘old ways’ but ‘all things new!’

Can lessons be learnt by ‘all and sundry’ or will one continue to manipulate, lie, cheat, abuse the various organs and systems of democracy, just to stay in power or to acquire power!

Back to Harare – it was brilliant and Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe has signed a historic power-sharing deal with his long-time rival, opposition leader, Morgan Tsvangirai (see pix left)

The speech by Robert Mugabe (see pix left) was sadly ‘an abuse’ and totally uncalled for, when he used the ’script to attack’ but then again, what you expect of individuals who just refuse to change or accept the ‘new world order’ or the true values of democracy - but then again, what can you expect from one Robert Mugabe except ‘continued political venom?’

In fact, we have politicians like him all over!

Despite the ‘horror speech’ by Mugabe – the two smiled and shook hands at the ceremony in the capital, Harare, attended by African dignitaries.

Mr Tsvangirai said the agreement provided the best hope for Zimbabwe and called on President Mugabe to work together to implement the deal.

On the other hand - Mr Mugabe said he was committed to the deal and would “do his best”.

Mr Mugabe, MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai and Arthur Mutambara - leader of a breakaway MDC faction - signed the agreement in front of some 3,000 invited guests in Zimbabwe’s International Conference Centre.

Can we all learn a lesson or two from this event?
