JG’S LETTER IN MALAYSIAKINI TODAY - CLASSIC EXAMPLE OF GUTTER JOURNALISM.

Despite all the hype about 1Malaysia, something is ’seriously rotten’ in the country.
It is disgraceful when journalists who are supposed to be custodians of truth and fair-play become irresponsible scribes.
Utusan Malaysia-owned Kosmo’s article headlined ‘Takdir Yasmin‘ is despicable, cruel and insensitive.
It is a classic example of gutter journalism.
I’m glad that it has ‘touched off a storm of protest’ from Yasmin’s friends in the media, advertising industry and others in civil society.
The call for a boycott of Utusan’s publications is justified. They have long behaved in a manner that is outright irresponsible and racist.
I do not know why they have not been hauled up and punished by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
I’m advised that a letter has been drafted by former and current journalists protesting against Kosmo’s story.
It is addressed to Utusan Malaysia chairman Tan Sri Hashim Makaruddin and a copy is expected to be sent to the Home Minister.’
Though I expect nothing to change we will wait the outcome, for ‘academic purposes!’
For a group that takes a high moral, self righteous ground, was it not aware of treasured Asian values and customs?
Running a story that showed utter disregard for the late Malaysian filmmaker, her family and Malaysians who are still mourning her demise, is utterly cruel and insensitive.
Racism, polarisation, insensitiveness, cruelty, inhumane treatment of fellow Malaysians, abuse of power, corruption, rising custodial deaths - is this all we have to show come August 31st?
Eds note: Kosmo! made a front-page an apology to Yasmin’s family today

Despite all the hype about 1Malaysia there can be no other better example to show that something have gone ‘seriously rotten’ in Malaysia, that today we have individuals holding responsible positions of trust in a society and in a constitutional monarchy, who sell their souls and positions and make orders and judgments in the interest of highest bidders from business and political conglomerates!
‘a decent Malaysian she was!’ - Dr Jacob George
Or
that we also have plenty of disgraceful and irresponsible scribes writing irresponsible and disgraceful articles and spins after financial and other gratifications or worst writing an article as they did in the Utusan Malaysia-owned Kosmo tabloid about the celebrated movie-maker Yasmin Ahmad, who died last
Saturday from a stroke!
I am glad that it has touched off a storm of protest from her
friends in the media, advertising industry and others in the civil society!
The call for a boycott of Utusan’s publications is justified for far too long they have behaved in a manner that is irresponsible and racists!
I do not know why they were not called in and punished by the Ministry of Home Affairs either?
I am advised that a letter has been drafted by former and current journalists protesting
against Kosmo’s story.
It is addressed to Utusan Malaysia chairman Tan
Sri Hashim Makaruddin and a copy is expected to be sent to the Home
Minister.
We will wait the outcome!
What shocks me is the timing of the said article as with others shows something seriously wrong with this media group!
And for a group who takes a high moral, self righteous ground were they not aware of Asian values and customs either?
Is it a secret that dear friend Yasmin’s family was grieving her loss and was utterly vulnerable?
But that did not stop these predator scribes from running a story that showed utter disregard for the late
Malaysian filmmaker, her family and the many Malaysians who still
mourn her.
The Kosmo article headlined “Takdir Yasmin” is despicable, cruel and insensitive but it is a classic example which shows how low down our society and several institutions of state have gone and how many low lives are occupying positions of responsibility in this nation of ours and serving not the interest of that position of trust but their own self interest and political and financial agenda!
Rising racism, Insensitivness, cruelty, inhumane treatment of fellow Malaysians, breakdown of the separation of powers of state, the abuse of power and corruption and rising custodial deaths - Is this all we have to show come this August 31st again?

JG SAYS INTRODUCTION OF KPIs TIMELY AND WELCOMED!BUT IS IT ENOUGH?
July 27, 2009 on 12:48 pm | In General | Comments Off‘Najib done well introducing KPIs at this juncture! - Dr Jacob George

Malaysian Premier Najib Abdul Razak should be commented for the ‘timely announcement’ of the much awaited Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) program with the naming of lead ministers for the six national key results areas (NKRA)!
The individuals all picked have a brilliant track record namely deputy premier Muhyiddin Yassin as the lead minister for widening access to quality and affordable education, Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein for crime prevention, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mohd Nazri Aziz for fighting corruption.
At the other end - naming Women, Family and Community Development Minister Shahrizat Jalil to raise the living standard of the low-income people, Rural and Regional Development Minister Shafie Apdal for upgrading infrastructure in the rural and interior regions and Transport Minister Ong Tee Keat for improving public transportation in a moderate period of time are all welcomed!
Now that the announcement is over and the people’s rising expectation it is pertinent the program move fast along time lines with periodic updates and audits!
Perhaps, it would be brilliant to bring in certain NGO or Civil Society individuals with track record into the advisory panel which would be seen proactively and promisingly as harvesting thoughts and brain waves from many a new spectrum - all part of the premier’s 1Malaysian concept?
Trust you got my drift?

TEOH BENG HOCK 30 - UNANSWERED QUESTIONS - TENGKU RAZALEIGH HAMZAH RIGHT ON CUE!
July 23, 2009 on 2:44 pm | In General | Comments Off

Charismatic former Finance Minister Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah (above left) raised the following (see below) in his recent article on the same and I cannot but concur that once again he is on track!
Mr Teoh Beng Hock’s death marks a watershed in the attitude of the public towards their government. The government has plumbed a new low in loss of credibility. Many people have come up to tell me in anger or despair that they feel their country has gone off the rails. People who previously considered themselves apolitical have been roused into active engagement.
There have been too many deaths under custody. But this death is particularly disturbing because Mr Teoh died after interrogation by a specially commissioned watchdog agency, inaugurated with fanfare last year by the outgoing administration. The very agency set up to combat the abuse of power has become in the public eye a symbol of the abuse of power.
Mr Teoh was a mere witness. He was questioned about the possible misuse of funds by his employer, a state assemblyman, to buy flags for the last Merdeka celebrations. The sum in question was RM2,400. He was questioned for eight hours through the night. He was found dead the following day outside the MACC’s headquarters.
Mr Teoh, 30, would have registered his marriage last weekend. His fiancée is two-months pregnant.
If the Perak debacle reminded us of the importance of the Constitution, the death under suspicious circumstances of Mr Teoh Beng Hock has brought home in a heart-wrenching way how much we need our public institutions to be independent and law-abiding. A shocked public is demanding answers, and rightly so.
Questions about how Mr Teoh died cannot be shut down with the usual warning that it is “liable to confuse the public” because the public is already confused. We are confused about how an idealistic young man with everything to live for can enter the headquarters of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission as a witness one day and be found dead outside the next.
Questions about the death of Mr Teoh cannot be swept aside with the paternalistic instruction to “leave it to the authorities to investigate,” because the death of Mr Teoh appears to be just the result of “leaving it to the authorities investigate.” It is precisely the independence of the investigating authorities that people are questioning.
Questions about the death of Mr Teoh cannot be suppressed with the warning “not to speculate” when the investigating authorities were apparently able to prognosticate, ahead of their own investigations, that foul play was not involved, and some leaders appear to have special knowledge that Mr Teoh jumped to his death of his own accord.
Questions about the death of Mr Teoh cannot be evaded with the low tactic of racializing the issue because the death of Mr Teoh touches us all as citizens, brothers and sisters and fathers and mothers. None of us wants to live under a government apparatus that cannot be trusted to be independent and to tell the truth.
Questions about the death of Mr Teoh cannot be suppressed with authoritarian prohibitions because they are about the integrity and independence of institutions that belong to the people. Those ministers who talk down to the people may have forgotten who put them into government and pays their wages, and whose questions they were put there to ask. And to answer.
To ask such questions is not to “politicize” the issue but to exercise our ownership of an issue that touches each and every one of us as citizens: our basic institutions are rotted out, and we are headed down the path of a failed state.
It is our right and indeed our duty as citizens to keep asking questions when someone dies under circumstances that put the entire government under a shadow. As we ask these questions let us accept our joint responsibility to push uncompromisingly for an overhaul of the key institutions that have rotted through under exactly the kind of authoritarianism that would prohibit discussion of the circumstances of the death of Mr Teoh Beng Hock.

VAST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A STATESMAN AND A SPOILT BRAT! WHAT ARE YOU?
July 23, 2009 on 9:14 am | In General | Comments OffOver the years - more than 37 to be exact, I have addressed many a controversial issues in society! (see above!)
They were all exclusive front page stories in the Harian Metro!
But in all issues, I was objective and the agenda was to address accountability, good governance, transparency and values grounded in our society!
That ‘wrongs’ would be made right!
That as a civil society grounded in ethics and human decency - we could address issues for the betterment our nation without biases or prejudices be they racists or political!
So it is really sad to see Malaysia’s small time and irrelevant ‘politicians wannabe’ playing the racial card once again or trying to address issues in a manner that is racist to the core to get political mileage for their own political agenda - not that of the nation of 27 million!
They think by threatening, organizing demonstrations (be it with just an handful!) with huge banners containing racist and seditious uttering - which itself shows they have no support neither credibility but only there to bulldoze their political small mindedness on others in Malaysia!
Stupid idiots!
They love only themselves not the nation!
These ‘bird brained idiots’ are only interested in political ‘tit for tats’ and ‘milking the gravy train’ from which they live exorbitant and carefree lifestyles!
Today, we face major challenges locally and internationally which requires all hands to be focused and on board to take the nation through these challengers!
And those who fail to do so - because certain quarters encourage them to be racist or controversial, be they the mainstream racist electronic and print media, political parties, politicians rejected by the populace in the last General Elections, or worst, corrupt politicians and individuals, or worst still failed institutions of state - it is time to pause and change for the better!
I pray beloved Premier Najib Tun Razak sends home the signals to these ‘political adventurers and desperadoes’ that their manner of political games will not be tolerated by him nor the nation!
For there is a vast difference between a statesman and a political brat!
You go figure!

WILL CLINTON GET TO HEAR ABOUT MALAYSIA’S TEOH BENG HOCK?
July 21, 2009 on 3:52 pm | In General | Comments Off ‘ I sincerely hope the issue of human rights and the non partisan facilitation of the rule of law would be also discussed!’- Dr Jacob George.
WILL CLINTON GET TO HEAR ABOUT MALAYSIA’S TEOH BENG HOCK?
Madam US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will be flying in to Thailand for a regional security conference expected to focus on the North Korean nuclear threat, Burma’s rights record and terrorism!
She may also look into the various allegations of money transfers using third party countries and their banking institutions in the region to fund North Korea’s nuclear adventure while her people starve and suffer!
According to diplomat friends in the region Clinton will travel from New Delhi to Bangkok to meet Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, before heading to the warm island of Phuket for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Regional Forum (ARF).
According to other sources a major thrust of Clinton’s debut appearance at the ARF will be how to crank up the pressure on North Korea to return to multilateral nuclear disarmament talks after its missile and nuclear weapons tests.
During these sessions Madam Secretary of State will also meet her counterparts from South Korea, China, Japan and Russia - which you all know were with the United States in her six years of disarmament negotiations.
However despite the political and diplomatic overtures arrogant North Korea bolted the talks after the United Nations censured its long-range missile test in April this year.
The showdown with the international community took another turn for the worse when it staged a nuclear test in May.
Apart from these issues I sincerely hope the issue of human rights and the non partisan facilitation of the rule of law would be also discussed!
I am advised certain states are planning to put forward their own version of human rights charter which to me is a blatant attempt to undermine already existing norms and principles in the UN Charters which are sufficient!
Perhaps, these are attempts by certain rogue states to outline their own version of ‘human rights’ where brutality, violence, death and all things vulgar could be made justifiable in the manner certain states institution work to undermine popular dissent and when civil societies raise up to address the blatant abuse of the law, corruption, lack of accountability and good governance and high powered racism and hypocrisy!
A stark reminder for the forum to address is the unresolved issue of Burma’s icon Aung San Suu Kyi on trial over an incident in which she had no control whatsoever!
Burma or Myanmar is on record - Asean’s most troublesome member since joining the bloc in 1997!
A pariah state in my book!
Her generals have shown their continued defiance on a regular basis whether it is on matter of humanitarian aid, unprovoked violence unleashed on religious Monks dissenting or the manner human rights is trampled or worst still even in refusing to allow UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to visit the opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi when he visited the country.
It is my hope Madam Clinton would address these issues and abuses as she does the region’s economy and joint action on tackling H1N1 or other issues close to her heart like health, terrorism and environmental issues!

But I wonder if she while on flight or in several meetings may also be briefed on the death of a Malaysian Teoh Beng Hock?
Malaysia’s Teoh may not be a Mahatma or even a Sanjay lest a Mandela but to millions now certainly an icon whose mysterious death will certainly raise many an issue on the manner nations adhere to the rule of law as enshrined in the United Nation’s Charters!

FROM A REPORT FROM MALAYSIAKINI!
July 20, 2009 on 6:36 pm | In General | Comments OffConsumer Association of Subang and Shah Alam, Selangor (Cassa) urged the government to be proactive in tackling the perennial air pollution in Malaysia. The association also questioned the reliability of the Air Pollution Index (API) released by the Department of Environment (DOE) on its website twice daily - at 11am and 5pm.
![]() |
Cassa president Jacob George (right) told Malaysiakini the association received 19 complaints today and had been averaging 10 to 15 the past week from residents in the Klang Valley.
Most of the complainants said children and elders were the most affected, suffering from sickness and breathing difficulties, caused by the poor air quality.
According to the DOE, as of 11am today, 33 of 50 areas nationwide recorded ‘moderate’ air quality while 16 were considered ‘good’.
Only Kuala Selangor recorded an API reading of 112, which is considered ‘unhealthy’.
Questionable API
All previous ‘hot spots’ such as Port Klang (88), Shah Alam (72) and Cheras (77) showed readings of ‘moderate’ levels.
Air quality readings of 0 to 50 comes under the category of good, moderate from 51 to 100 and unhealthy from 101 to 200.
George, however, said API statistics are not longer reliable as a tool to inform the public of how bad the air pollution level is.
![]() |
“The public have lost confidence in it as it always show the air condition to be at a ‘moderate or good’ stage. What they are told, and go through outside, is different.
“The complainants, especially the professionals, know that something is not right, and they are asking us whether the government has done anything to solve the problem,” said George.
“I just do not understand why the need for secrecy of API. What is there to hide from the public. Malaysians will appreciate DOE telling them the real situation.”
George said until now, nothing has been done to solve the problem which has been plaguing the nation for such a long time.
Actions must be taken
He said DOE updates on the air condition twice a day was not enough, and suggested that the alert should be given every two hours.
According to George, the government should instruct all news media to carry the updates about the air quality on a frequent basis.
They should also inform the public as to the appropriate precautions to take in situations where the air quality has deteriorated.
![]() |
“Other than that, excess open burning must be stopped, heavy vehicles which emit waste gases must be reduced in number,” he said.
George also said that the Malaysian government must make official protests to the Indonesian government, informing them of the current situation in Malaysia.
The illegal burnings in Riau province of Sumatra last month were the main factor contributing to the air pollution in Malaysia.
“It is not a small issue, but a matter of life and death; the government should treat it seriously and take steps to solve the problem as soon as possible,” he said.

To me this is a perfect picture depicting 1Malaysia!
Not the pictures tailored nor the ones shown or articles written by ghost writers and political prostitutes for their political master in certain vernacular newspapers!
However, it was a very sad occasion and one that will have severe ramification for this nation unless those with soiled and tainted hands and souls are made to account for their misdeeds and adventurism!
There is no room for half measures neither for cosmetic changes!
Too many things have happened in so short a time and Malaysians (from which ever political divide) no matter what these prostituting vernacular say know something is really rotten in this nation of ours!
If handled with political expediency in mind or half measures we can expect a major backlash come the next general elections!
You do not have to be a rocket scientist to say this!
This brings to my mind what our nation’s beloved founding father and first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman said to me while he was hospitalized and I was asked to look personally at allegations that a child died of starvation in Lunas, Kedah (the rice Bowl of Malaysia!) in the 80’s!
I remember clearly - ‘Jacob we must do the right thing! So find out if these allegations are indeed true! I want the truth! Please do the right thing – check son!’

TEOH’S DEATH WILL CAUSE SEVERE DAMAGE TO BN AT NEXT GENERAL ELECTIONS!

TEOH’S DEATH WILL CAUSE SEVERE DAMAGE TO BN AT NEXT GENERAL ELECTIONS!
While I welcome the statement by Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak that a full detailed and comprehensive probe will be initiated in the investigation of the death of Teoh Beng Hock, it cannot hold back my ‘shock and sadness’ at yet another tragic loss of life in ‘custody’ – this time of one Teoh Beng Hock!

Like millions of Malaysians’ I cannot but convey my most heartfelt condolence to his loved ones.
The family of the deceased like most peace loving and law abiding Malaysians must be horrified at the various happenings in the country a month before we celebrate again the nation’s birthday!
I have no problems with the need for accountability, good governance and transparency!
I have no love lost for corrupt civil servants, politicians or members of the executive, legislature or judiciary!
And like me millions in this nation of ours share the same sentiment of not condoning corruption be they from any political divide!
But like all educated and exposed Malaysian, I am concerned when I see or get the perception, rightly or wrongly, that the MACC seem to be overly enthusiastic in investigating cases involving the opposition while the probes on the ‘big sharks’ from the ruling political parties fizzle out.
For example, like others, which include former Prime Minister Tun Mahathir Mohamed, I am shocked and surprised of the latest revelation of a former MB owning a palatial home!
Or the alleged wealth he and several other past and present head of state or politicians possess while giving religious and self righteous sermons to others, more so to future generations on national television networks which denotes the doublespeak and hypocrisy of these thick skinned individuals!
May I humbly ask - what is the state of the investigations into the recent cases of money politics?
What about the infamous PKFZ scandal?
It is moments like this, all Malaysian get a flashback of the ‘same sentiment’ that prevailed on all those high powered cases involving the ‘political high and mighty’ involving billions and with those cases going no where during the Mahathir era!
Malaysians have not forgotten the infamous issues on the rule of law, the judiciary and impropriety surrounding the ‘Lingam tapes’ which despite the media blitz, hype and sensation has led nowhere!
If the ruling government wants to win the ‘hearts, minds and confidence’ of all Malaysians, if they want to regain the electoral trust of those millions who voted for the opposition it should and must show that no one is above the law, be they a member of the ruling party or the Pakatan!
But first it is pertinent to seek a total and comprehensive review and reform of the MACC investigation procedures and of its leadership!
This is all the more important now following the death of Teoh Beng Hock only hours after being questioned and the assertion that he was questioned from 5pm to the early hours of the morning.
This is a grave violation of the law when the individual was not even a suspect but ‘a source’ assisting an investigation!
What was so pertinent that Teoh should be questioned for hours throughout the night depriving him of sleep, causing severe stress and anxiety and finally his death?
The allegations surrounding the methods used by the MACC to gather evidence has been alarming more so when it is collaborated by many who have had similar experiences!
If the MACC wants to be respected by Malaysians they must first be seen and respected for its neutrality and professionalism!
They cannot and should not allow a public perception as they have today of being partisan, selective or protective of certain interests!
A young man’s life has been cut short, a young lass losing her future husband on the eve of their wedding, parents their child and to all peace loving and law abiding Malaysians a decent individual full of life and a future dying under mysterious circumstances!
And whether there is an independent probe conducted by a group of ‘recycled individuals’ with cables to the establishment because of their past or present link to both the government or the corporate sector – Malaysians will not forget this tragic incident which will cause the Barisan Nasional a huge price come the next general elections!

And whatever way you look at it - It is a total mess and one that cannot be undone now by further stupid remarks bordering on plain blatant executive stupidity and incompetence!
That includes that ‘Nazri statement!’
It is a sad day in Malaysia when something like this happens and buggering fools and idiots try to ‘excuse themselves’ from liability!
It is worse when certain quarters try to mitigate the issue with utter nonsensical arguments and preventive denials but all is now lost!
This death will be remembered and there will be a political price to pay – come the next General Election - thanks to idiots to whom we have trusted and given power to act but act with professionalism and competence!
By the way what was the reason and rational to interrogate a witness from 5pm until the early hours of the next morning when he is not a suspect?
And what do the statute books say about interrogation tactics, methods and hours?
I am certain that our beloved Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak will wield the axe ‘swiftly and strategically’ and hold those behind this mess accountable!

The taxi fare will go up by RM1 to RM3 for the first kilometer and by two sen to 12 sen every 100 metres for the subsequent distance. The fare for airport taxi using coupons will rise by RM2.
In Sabah, the non-air-conditioned hire car fare will rise by 2.5 sen to 20.5 sen per km and the air-conditioned hire car fare by 2.8 sen to 22.8 sen per km while the fare for airport taxis using coupons will increase by RM10.
The taxi fare will go up by RM5 to RM10 for the first three kilometers and by 2 sen to 12 sen for every 100 metres for the subsequent distance.
Nazri said the Cabinet approved the fare increases at its meeting on June 17.
He also said that the government had outlined several improvements to the public transportation industry following the fare increase, including the use of the Global Positioning System and e-ticketing, 25 per cent fare deduction for the handicapped and people above 60, and uniforms for school bus drivers.
But these are all cosmetics and the worst being the statement on Global Positioning System (GPS) for public transport.
Why do we need GPS on public transport when the routes are defined?
Unless someone is going berserk with spins for GPS but this is not what consumers are seeking but favorable fares and a competent, safe and comprehensive public transport system!
I have already stated this last night and again over ASTRO AWANI News today!
It is still not too late to suspend the announcement based on the uproar it has created to Malaysian consumers!
I pray when Prime Minister Najib Razak returns from Egypt he will announce an immediate suspension of the above.
But consumers are also brazing themselves for news of more hikes on other goods and services soon!
And the nightmare is about to begin for a battered community of Malaysian consumers!

CASSA’S INNOVATIVE CB2U SCHEME TO HELP MALAYSIAN CONSUMERS!
July 13, 2009 on 8:45 am | In General | Comments Off
‘ CB2U - a breakthrough for Malaysian consumers?’
CASSA’S INNOVATIVE CB2U SCHEME TO HELP MALAYSIAN CONSUMERS!
To put it mildly - the present economic condition in Malaysia is one that is most challenging.
Malaysian and International economists agree that globally the present situation could be worse than the great depression of the 1930’s.
According to the investigations and research conducted by the Consumers Association of Subang and Shah Alam, Selangor (CASSA), the demography that is most hit in Malaysia will be those from the middle and lower income groups!
This despite the announcement that the country received two stimulus packages!
Till today no one actually knows how the two stimulus packages or its distribution or the newly announced many ‘goodies’ have or will translate into an effective financial assistance to the man on the Malaysian street hard hit by the escalation prices of goods and services and with retrenchments and foreclosures staring at their faces?

‘The ongoing price war between the hypermarkets do not help in fact they ar really misleading!’ - Dr Jacob George
According to nationwide feedbacks received by CASSA Malaysians were still going out and shopping less and this is seriously dampening consumer spending despite ‘a price war’ conducted by hypermarkets!
CASSA has noted that the Budget 2009 did not introduce direct measures to boost consumer spending although there were plenty of incentives such as higher tax rebate, free electricity and lower marginal tax rates to lessen Malaysian consumers’ financial burden!
But these well intentioned measures do not encourage higher retail spending!
Will Budget 2010 be any different?
The pertinent question asked by CASSA then is how do we encourage consumer spending in an organized and responsible way to spearhead economic growth at the same time assist the consumers to uplift his income?
According to CASSA’s data consumers are spending over 60% of their income at ‘provision stores, 1% at petrol stations and 39% at super and hypermarkets.
Put in another way this translates into 22.6% for food, 22.2 % for rent, fuel and power, 19 % for transport and 19.9 % for miscellaneous goods ands services.
The per capital income of Malaysian consumers is RM22, 345.00
According to compiled data consumers average expenditure is around RM2, 400.00
And out of this figure a conservative RM500.00 is allocated for monthly grocery bills!
As CASSA indicates this does not take into account the expenditure for Credit card, upkeep for parents, cigarettes, outings, Astro, Streamyx and other payments.
As such the present situation if left unattended will cause severe financial problems to all consumers and to address this CASSA has initiated a nationwide program and scheme called ‘CASH BACK TO YOU’ (CB2U) which will address the problems faced by consumers in two fronts namely:
- addressing their grocery bills and expenditure (min RM500.00)
- Help them build a small business to bring financial returns in these dire times.
The scheme CB2U when implemented will benefit all players and stakeholders namely:
- Consumers
- Retail partners
- Government
- The Nation’s Economy.
First, the Consumers will have at minimum an avenue to address their monthly grocery bills.
Secondly, there is an opportunity for a secondary income.
For the stakeholders like you who will be our partners:
1. A loyal client base
2. A higher neighborhood consumer spending
3. An opportunity to see a visible increase in consumer spending nationwide
As far as the Malaysian government goes, feedbacks received so far denote that they will be sensitive to the needs and rights of consumers while acknowledging that the program could be politically advantageous and right for the government in view of recent political setbacks and in-view the possibility of the withdrawal of subsidies in the near future!
Presently CASSA is fine tuning the program before the final presentation to KPDNKKP and the PM’ Office!
We have already briefed the KPDNKKP Minister, the Director Generals and senior officials at a private session.
CASSA is briefing Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at a private session soon. Several of his aides are already briefed.
It is our desire to invite the Prime Minister to launch the said CB2U program.
We already have 300,000 Consumers nationwide to support this program on the onset and the target is over 1 million consumers within the first 90 day of launch.
IN RECAPING – THESE ARE THE INGREDIENTS OF CB2U SCHEME!
Charity
Government Participation/Endorsement
Nationwide Consumer Drive (300,000 now expanding to One Million)
Fully Consumer Driven Scheme
Timely
Perfect Platform for “Retailers-Government-Consumer” Marriage
Positive Approach to Increase Retail Market share.
No one left out - Small Operators meaning (Cash & Carry outlet, KK, Bintang, 99 or 7Eleven) or Big operators (Giants, Tesco, Carrefour, Mydin, Cold Storage, Jusco – all are being roped into the scheme.
The hard fact is – we hope - CB2U SCHEME WILL BE A REALITY VERY SOON!

SHOP FOR YOUR SCHOOL CAMPAIGN - AN EXTENSION OF THE 1MALAYSIA CONCEPT OF CARING AND SHARING!
July 9, 2009 on 8:12 am | In General | Comments Off
Endorsed by The Consumers Association of Subang and Shah Alam, Selangor (CASSA)
KEYNOTE ADDRESS BY DATUK DR. JACOB GEORGE
Good afternoon members of the media, distinguished guests, teachers, students, ladies and gentlemen.
Our beloved Prime Minister, Najib Tun Razak has launched the 1Malaysia concept. A concept which to me is basically the coming together in unity despite our racial, religious and other diversities.
A coming together of all stakeholders for a national cause and this afternoon I would like to say that I believe this program called ‘Shop For Your School’ is to me quite similar to the same concept where various stakeholders come together to assist a target group and in this case our schools and its school going children!
First of all, I would like to thank Subang Parade as well as congratulate them for organizing this ceremony to mark the closing of the Shop for your School 2009 program. I am very proud that this has been a successful community based program. I am also glad that this is the sixth consecutive year Subang Parade has conducted this campaign and it is a pleasure for CASSA to show our utmost support for a campaign such as this.
For a community as close-knitted as in Selangor, we have never truly seen a community event which supports the schools as does the ‘Shop for your School’ program. I believe this campaign is not only an effort to improve the educational aid and co-curricular facilities for each school but it is also a fun way for the community to show their support to their respective schools. A sense of pride and belonging will definitely be instilled in them.
Schools are constantly in need of educational tools such as IT Products and reading material to help assist the growth and development of students. There are not enough programs out there that deliver the needs of these schools. I believe that the Shop for your School campaign creates a great opportunity for Subang Parade to contribute to the society in a bid to support the schools around the area. I am proud to see such efforts like this which not only support schools, but support the initiative towards the community.
This year, the Shop for your School 2009 campaign saw an increase of a solitary school in the number of participating schools compared to last years campaign. This brings the total to 23 primary and secondary schools from Subang Jaya, USJ, Shah Alam, Puchong & Petaling Jaya.
Although with the current economic situation we are facing, the campaign managed to gain a steady point total count. A whopping 1.9 million points was collected for the whole duration, only a slight decrease compared to last year’s total of 2 million points.
Before I end my speech, I would like to express my sincere thank you to all the schools, including the students, teachers as well as the parents for supporting the Shop for your School campaign. I would also like to extend my congratulations to the winners for the campaign and hope to receive more supports from the schools for next year’s Shop for your School campaign.
Thank you.

INDONESIAN U-TURN ON MAIDS? SO WHAT HAPPENED INDONESIA? WHO NEEDS WHO MORE?
July 8, 2009 on 10:01 am | In General | Comments Off
‘Let the truth prevail till then Suparno should shut up’ - Dr Jacob George
INDONESIAN U-TURN ON MAIDS? SO WHAT HAPPENED INDONESIA? WHO NEEDS WHO MORE?
As I had indicated when this whole episode exploded triggered by governments and individuals with an agenda!
They went to town with it claiming that Malaysians were ugly, bad employers and totally insensitive and cruel to their Indonesian maids!
We were accused of all things wide open in the cruel wide world!
But, perhaps, just short of course of something close to ‘war crimes!’
But the injustices their maids do in our country was swept under the carpet again for reasons best known to them especially the activities of maid agencies who cheated employers of more than RM7000/- and organized for maids to run away after three months, recycling the same to other unsuspecting employers!
Now realizing that Malaysians are not stupid and we will not be blackmailed since we look elsewhere for our maids they suddenly realize their utmost stupidity and announce with their faces behind tails that they are lifting their self imposed ban!
The ban was imposed last month after a 43-year-old Malaysian woman was charged with causing grievous bodily harm after beating her Indonesian maid and scalding her with boiling water.
The lead fool in this matter was Indonesia’s labor minister Erman Suparno who made proposals that cannot be fulfilled unless the government of Indonesia played a major role but they cannot and have not!
Indonesians have come and gone using different passports and under different names whether they had a police record or not in this country and for that matter even in the place of residence.
Among the stupid proposals were that maids to be allowed to retain their passports, instead of giving them to employers but refused to respond to me whether the Government of Indonesia would reimburse Malaysians their over RM7000/- if that maid ran away with a new found lover or construction worker or worst still with the growing number of Bangladeshis in this country!
He wants Malaysians to be punished and I have no problems with that if indeed there was wrong but with the kind of wild allegations these maids make which has an audience in Jakarta, most importantly, with certain NGO’s when the maids sexual and other indiscretions are exposed and when exposed they instead accuse their employers of abuse both physical and sexual the matter gets clouded!
It has worked many a time in the past!
Indonesia cannot compare their maids with those from the Philippines for they are world apart and it is simply stupid to ask for higher pay when the Indonesians are not that skilled or versatile in language as the Filipinos are!
How can we talk about minimum wage when even Malaysians are deprived of this in our work sector!
Suparno should just shut up and keep his maids in Indonesia!
Instead of talking about Malaysian laws Suparno should explain how is he helping to address the over 1 Million illegal Indonesians in Malaysia?
Most importantly he should not play up the allegations of over 50 abuses a year against a total population of over 300,000 maids?
The facts speak for themselves for those who are intelligent!

KEEPING THEM HONEST - KAMPONG BUAH PALA - LET THE TRUTH PREVAIL!
July 6, 2009 on 3:25 pm | In General | Comments Off ‘Let the truth prevail!’ - Dr Jacob George
KEEPING THEM HONEST – LET THE TRUTH BE TOLD!
There has been so much ‘twist and turns’, claims and denials from both the former state government and the present that this political ‘tit for tat’ is absolutely stupid!
This is not the way forward or to address state and national issues!
Those who had the reins of power and those who continue to do must be accountable, transparent and provide corporate and good governance!
Only a coward will run, hide worst still under another’s soiled under-wear!
So enough of the political denials and rhetoric!
Please answer the following plainly:
First, former Penang Chief Minister Dr Koh Tsu Koon:
1. How the Brown housing trust (vested Crown) land was for the Kampung Buah Pala villagers was turned to TOL land?
2. Who were the beneficiaries of the trust?
3. We must know why and how the land was sold to the Penang State Government Officers Cooperative for RM3.2 million?
4. And most importantly, who were the key players in the state government, the cooperative and the developer responsible for the deal?
Now that is not all and now perhaps present Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng should answer the following as well:
1. The legal and other circumstances surrounding the transfer of the land that was effected three weeks after the change of government!
2. Was Lim aware of this matter?
3. Was it the work of ‘little Napoleons’ in the Penang Land Office undertaking this without the new government’s knowledge?
4. Will the present state government initiate a high powered probe and in the meantime apply for a stay of the matter on behalf the residents and in the public interest since fraud and abuse of power is being alleged?
The people of Penang need to know quite implicitly who the ‘crooks and shenanigans’ are in this matter!

JG TO BOYCOTT BERNAMA’S 1KONSUMER PROGRAM – PERIOD!
July 6, 2009 on 2:56 pm | In General | Comments Off ‘ 1Konsumer - a program which classically confirms the ‘hunting with the hounds and running with the hares mentality’ of certain politically connected individuals?’ - Dr Jacob George
JG TO BOYCOTT BERNAMA’S 1KONSUMER PROGRAM – PERIOD!
I want to thank those behind all the calls and e-mails I received encouraging me on after I appeared upset the manner this program was conducted last night at 9pm!
First irritation was it was important for producers to know who they are inviting, the background, instead of allowing any individual (just because he is a friend of ‘Edward’) to participate in a program ‘live’ addressing consumer woes!
This was extremely unprofessional - not to say that no official invite was sent just a mobile call to guest!
Second, I was irritated that potshots and allegations were directed at former Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumers Affairs, Shahrir Abdul Samad (pix left)by this person when all and sundry in Malaysia have known Shahrir as a friend and a minister – totally dedicated, honest and decent!
Let me put on record that he was the best Domestic Trade and Consumers Affairs Minister I have worked with in all my 38 years of consumerism!
He was not on the panel to defend him but I did and it was obvious to all of you over the air that I was totally upset and angry and nearly walked off the set!
I have been a consumer advocate for more than 38 years and do not have to take such rubbish from certain ‘persona non grata!’
Thirdly why is this program called 1Konsumer when they basically ‘rojak’ this program with all kinds of diverts in news and issues which does not reflect the original discussion theme or consumerism at heart?
I asked the anchor lady last night and she could not answer but to say that the producers do not want another talk show!
So in other words – what they are saying is that they are camouflaging a program under the ‘umbrella of consumerism’ to attract media hits and sponsorships?
It is like ‘hunting with the hounds and running with the hares’ the favorite occupation of certain media individuals with political and other aspirations?
I will ask this question to the relevant officials at the next National Consumer Council meeting in Putrajaya!
In the meantime – last night was the last I would appear in such a stupid program!

JG ON BERNAMA’S 1KONSUMER LIVE PROGRAM TONITE SUNDAY JULY 5TH AT 8.30PM
July 5, 2009 on 11:36 am | In General | Comments Off
It has been a fascinating week for me.
Really three talk shows over three days – namely TV Selangor on Friday 3 July, where we dealt with the controversy regarding land deals - be it transfers, allocation, transfer abuses or plain theft of private property by a well organized group of educated rogues!
The talk show was free flowing, open and at times hard hitting despite attempts to give it a political swing or propaganda!
Then last night it was Astro Awani’s – ‘Perspektif kita’ which will have its re-runs throughout this week including tonight where we discussed ‘the quality of life!’
Again, instead of talking conservatively, the panelists spoke proactively, with addressing comprehensively bigger issues and problems - which was brilliant!
Yes, my two kids Reuel and Talitha joined me for the Astro program and you can catch them in the second row on the right, Reuel wearing a blacK T-Shirt and Talitha - a red one!
Tonight on Bernama TV at 8.30pm we discuss live – over the program 1Konsumer the issue and question of Prices!
So tune in and watch it and please do initiate the ‘telephone call ins’ over the scheduled hotlines to the panelists!

POOR TURNOUT A WARNING TO PAKATAN RAKYAT!
July 1, 2009 on 9:22 am | In General | Comments Off‘Malaysian voters are not as politically gullible as they used to be!’ - Dr Jacob George
POOR TURNOUT A WARNING TO PAKATAN RAKYAT!
It is strange that at a time when there is ‘political discontent’ within the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) fold and the states they administer, the former feels it was more politically correct to indulge wastefully in ‘Najib bashing’ rather than introducing solutions to the many problems the nation faced!

But perhaps, it was politically necessary to divert the attention on Najib instead of the Pakatan Rakyat themselves to either make a difference or a change despite being in office for more than a year!
But the fact remains – to the PR it was better to ‘bash Najib’ rather than to admit their own mistakes and shortcomings or the serious indications that all is not well within the Pakatan Rakyat fold!
It is just not the ‘unity talks’ or the ‘fall out’ from it, despite huge ‘damage control efforts’ by Anwar Ibrahim that kept the alternative political coalition still together after weeks of political comatose!
It is the manner PR administered states are governed, the manner issues are addressed and political rhetoric however necessary, kept intelligent.
It is how the intelligent and politically alive electorate and civil society leaders are kept within the loop in the state administration and discussion!
It is whether ‘minds and hearts’ of voters are being managed, challenged and engaged by the new state administrations!
Even in Penang, Kedah and Selangor, there are issues beginning to surface and we cannot continue to blame solely all to the fault to previous administrations!
It is time to move on and take remedial steps of righting a wrong!
It is about leading!
I am certain that many who voted for the change in March 8 last year may be seriously having second thoughts and only the continued incompetence, corruption, arrogance, abuse of the law and blatant disregard to governance issues of the Barisan Nasional (BN) or ruling party is still assisting the Pakatan Rakyat continued political relevance.
If the BN can get its act together, I am certain it will be an interesting photo finish in the next general elections!
The signs and indications are already there that people are fed up of too much politicking on all sides of the political divide!
And an indication of that was seen when only less than 4,000 people turned up at the Stadium MPPJ in Kelana Jaya on Tuesday for Pakatan Rakyat ‘unity’ rally in the bid to project a united front.
The two-hour ceramah, which kicked off at about 9.30pm certainly attracted a much smaller crowd compared to previous similar rallies despite the appearance of top leaders from the opposition coalition.
This is despite the presence of all the leaders of the Pakatan Rakyat being present!
The issues discussed no different from past issues like the PKFZ scandal and the forthcoming preparations for July 14 Manek Urai by-election.
The vary fact all the leaders took pains to squash rumors of major cracks within Pakatan as a result of PAS’ flirting with Umno on the unity talks issue clearly confirmed in the minds of those present that there were still many an issue still unresolved and that whatever said and done non Malays must be wary of PAS!
If one had expected to be given a running discourse of what Pakatan Rakyat run states are doing to address the economic burdens of the nation, we were sadly mistaken.
The response was predictable with potshots being fired at Najib Abdul Razak’s 1Malaysia - a motto coined by the newly-minted leader after taking over as prime minister two months ago.

Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak is certainly not perfect, but, at least he is seriously trying to clean up and address ‘wrongs and misdeed’ of previous administrations!
Najib is certainly addressing various issues and having ‘watched him in action’, I am really pleased that at least, he is not running away from responsibilities or diverting issues of state but addressing them!
Interestingly, he is also bringing into his ‘administrative fold and think tank groups’ a wide range of individuals to initiate a major push and change for the better for the nation!
The least one can do is to wish him well rather than trying to create hurdles!
But instead what are his critics doing?
It is easy to take the podium and tear apart 1Malaysia concept, the former state administration or any of the federal government’s initiatives but what perhaps one had failed to address or acknowledge was perhaps, just perhaps, Malaysians were all today tired of all these political stuns and ‘tit for tat’ and wanted something more concrete, sustainable solutions and alternatives of what should be done to address the nations many difficulties, challengers and woes!
This is where Pakatan Rakyat has failed!
It is true that during the last elections many a candidate coming from questionable and without backgrounds or track records were nominated by a tsunami of voters angry and annoyed at the arrogance, incompetence and abuses of the Barisan Nasional!
But many are today watching, analyzing and certainly rethinking on that - their decisions and if the Pakatan Rakyat does not initiate a drastic and holistic change in the manner they select candidates, govern or address issues they are in for a rude shock sooner than they think!
The unfilled MPPJ Stadium is just a reminder for PR leaders to take stock that the Malaysian voters are not as politically gullible as they used to be!
